Rotisserie Lunch at Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards
Snack on succulent skewered meats and seasonal salads at this hip, young Winelands destination
Tuck into tasty fare amidst serene surrounds of one of the Cape Winelands’ hippest lifestyle destinations, Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards. Every week from Wednesday to Sunday, between 11:30am and 3pm, the beautifully designed Franschhoek estate invites families and friends to dine on a simple but superb rotisserie-based lunch.
Launched in December 2012, this novel midday meal offers a welcome alternative to the haute cuisine typically served up by the culinary capital’s host of premium fine dining restaurants. Though, it’s also just one of a handful of refreshing offerings present at this trendy, open-plan property. The youthful social setting – it ingeniously combines warm wood, glass and steel in an organic design – is also home to a state-of-the-art wine tasting centre, a small library, a sleek culinary shop and a distinguished cooking school.
But it’s this flavourful, child-friendly lunchtime feast that brings the buzz to the already vibey premises on a regular basis. Inspired by a popular rotisserie restaurant in London’s famed Harrods, Leopard’s Leap’s sweet and savoury buffet’s main feature is a range of tender free-range meats on the spit – pork belly with crispy crackling, juicy lamb neck and succulent chicken are all standard alternatives. These juicy cuts are accompanied by a pay-by-weight harvest table that spills over with fresh home-baked breads and herb butter, seasonal salads and roast vegetables sourced from the on-site organic garden, and a selection of delectable desserts. What’s more, kiddies’ options, like macaroni and cheese, toasted sandwiches and chicken twisters, are also available for the little ones on request.
Because anything goes at this easy, breezy spot, guests can choose to snack at a table indoors or out on one of the comfy sofas on the expansive stone stoep. And adults needn’t be concerned about the kids; they can scuttle across the estate’s sprawling lawns and clown around in the alfresco on-site play area.
Of course, a leisurely meal at this cutting-edge farm wouldn’t be complete without a glass or three of the estate’s versatile, accessible reds and whites. The wine tasting room and sales centre is open from Tuesdays to Sundays, and, for those lusting after something fruity and unique, the winery also whips up an exclusive assortment of creative wine cocktails – think a Chenin Blanc Martini, Rosé Cosmopolitan and Chardonnay Margarita.
Thus, suffice it to say, if you’re in the mood for honest food, refreshing drinks and a slow, pleasant day out in the Winelands, Leopard’s Leap’s laidback, family-friendly lunch is one of the pretty French corner’s finest options.
The Bill: Leopard’s Leap’s rotisserie-based lunch is one of the most affordable dining options in Franschhoek. The tender meats come at reasonable set prices, and the harvest table works on a pay-by-weight system (R17 per 100g), but it’s possible to enjoy a generous portion of everything for around R100.
