Café Extrablatt in Green Point

With roots in Germany, this eatery offers an international food experience where everyone can find their signature dish

Café Extrablatt, situated on Green Point Main Road, offers a mix of international and local fare. From a delicious variety of breakfasts, to mouthwatering lunches and yummy dinner options, to various nibbles and cocktail snacks, this restaurant which is just a hop, skip and jump from the Cape Town Stadium and needs to be on your must-try list!

This vibey restaurant, with origins in Germany, was brought to Cape Town back in 2011 by Guido Dierschke – still the owner today – who has a particular passion for people, food and our beautiful city.

Walking into Café Extrablatt, the first thing you notice is the friendly, eager-to-assist staff. Upon arrival we are warmly welcomed and introduced to the open-plan setup of Café Extrablatt. This design ensures that natural light flows through the entire restaurant unobstructed, making it an ideal spot for breakfast and brunch… speaking of which, they offer great buffets for both every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on public holidays. The buffets feature everything from fruit salads, cereal, and baked goods, to warm breakfast options such as bacon, eggs and sausage. Then there’s also the specialty omelettes, made just the way you like it by energetic Chef Calvin Midzi, with the kinds of tasty fillings that you just can’t quite replicate at home.

Patrons can also choose between the patio seating, the indoor booth-like seating, the corner couches, and the indoor smoking section on the top floor. Here, patrons can enjoy picturesque views of Cape Town Stadium from the balcony, there’s also a bar upstairs so no need to go down when you need a refill, and a fireplace, which is just where you want to be in winter.

Note: This space can also be booked for small events and functions, and Guido and his team allow for some decorating to suit your style or theme, so you can give your event extra flare and extra privacy. The best part is that there is no venue fee so you’ll only be charged for your food and drinks.

With Green Point’s perfect balance of urban buzz and picturesque scenery, Café Extrablatt is the ideal spot to start your day. Breakfast options cater to all preferences; from the Full English Breakfast to the #fitfam’s fave, the Vegetarian Health Breakfast. The latter consists of yogurt, muesli and a fresh fruit salad, drizzled with honey. What a delicious way to kick your day into gear!

The menu features a great variety of German-inspired dishes. There’s the German Farmer’s Breakfast, which is served as an omelette and incorporates onion, bacon and fried potato, with a side serving of gherkin and sourdough bread. We think Café Extrablatt just took breakfast to a whole new level! And it doesn’t stop there. From the kitchen at Extrablatt you’ll also get freshly baked croissants (some of the best we've tasted!), delicious pizzas, pastas and burgers, as well as their gourmet offering, which features beef, ostrich and seafood dishes. Be sure to look out for the German Corner on the menu, which includes the popular Currywurst mit ‘pom fritz’ and mayonnaise, which is traditional German sausage, served with a mild curry and tomato sauce. The German meatloaf, which is traditional German meatloaf, topped with egg and served with Bratkartoffeln (fried potato with onion and bacon) and served with mustard on the side - also a winner.

With German influences at the heart of this eatery’s offering, Café Extrablatt offers doesn’t just offer German food, but German sport is on the menu too! Patrons are invited to view screenings of German soccer matches (Bundesliga) on the venue’s big-screen TVs, which is a pretty unique offering in the Mother City. And what’s football without beer, right? The international franchise stocks a wide variety of both local and international beer including Castle Lite, Black Label, CBC craft beer and the German beer Paulaner. This is great for soccer fanatics and German expats alike, as Café Extrablatt presents a little taste from home.

And for those who would rather prefer a pink drink (or two), Café Extrablatt also offers a great happy hour special from Monday to Friday from 5pm to 8pm. Standard cocktails at Café Extrablatt will cost R34 each, which includes everything from the classic Cosmopolitan, Mai Tai and Pina Colada to the Screaming Orgasm (wink), El Diablo, the Bahama Mama, and everything in between. Jumbo cocktails, which include drinks like the Long Island Ice Tea, The Hurricane and Models Flash, will cost R39. Mocktails like the Coconut Kiss, Cape Town Stadium and Virgin Mojito cost R29 each. Suffice to say all are welcome, even that mate of yours who’s now off alcohol.

Also great to note is that Café Extrablatt’s kitchen is open until midnight, so late-night munchers can count on this Green Point haunt to keep your tummy filled way into the night!
