17 Public Swimming Pools in Cape Town and Surrounds That Are Open This Summer

Good news: You can still swim this summer, the City has opened five more public swimming pools for the peak summer season. The City has announced that, despite its current water-saving measures, 17 of its 35 public swimming pools will be open during the peak summer months, so you are still able to keep cool this summer season.

A picturesque place for a refreshing dip in the morning, Sea Point Pavilion swimming venue is located between the sea and the Sea Point promenade and offers spectacular views. The venue has three pools – an Olympic-sized pool perfect for the keep-fit enthusiasts and swimmers in training, looking to perfect their lap times; a shallow kids pool to keep the little ones cool and entertained; and the single diving board pool where you can practise the perfect dive. Be sure to get there early, as the premises, accommodating 1300 people, fill up fast during peak season. 
Opening hours: November 2018–January 2019, Monday–Sunday: 7am–6:30pm.

Apart from being a popular surfing spot and having a beautiful beach, Muizenberg also boasts a swimming pool facitility, using its own alternative source of water. This swimming spot accommodates 605 people during peak season in the 22-metre long main pool, as well as a 5m shallow kiddies pool. Five seasonal lifeguards and one seasonal senior lifeguard are on duty. In addition, new equipment at the pool includes a spinal board with head blocks and harness, a shade cover for lifeguards and four wraparound lifesaving devices.  The pool reopened on 1 December 2018 and will close again on 2 February 2019.

This public swimming pool accommodates communities in surrounding areas, who use it for formal training and recreational swimming throughout the year. There are lifeguards at the pool every day to ensure the safety of swimmers.
Opening hours: Monday–Sunday: 10am–5pm.

Concert Blvd | Retreat | +27 (0)21 701 1513

On days when the weather is a bit ‘iffy’, but you still want to swim, try the Long Street baths. The baths have been a favourite spot for Capetonians to cool off for over 100 years. There’s a large indoor pool – that can accommodate up to 600 people at one time – and Turkish steam baths. Lifeguards are always present for safety. With a length of 25 metres, the swimming pool is perfect for notching up laps. There is also a shallow pool for the children.
Opening hours: Monday–Sunday, 7am–7pm (summer season). Every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm, the baths are reserved for the exclusive use of women. The baths are closed on Christmas Day.

Mnandi Resort Swimming Pool on the Cape Flats is extremely popular during the festive season due to its wonderful camping site facilities, braai areas and of course, the main attraction: the great swimming pools. There is an enclosed water park, playground and picnic area and other facilities on the premises, offering a wide range of activities for all. Monwabisi Beach is next to the swimming pool area, and is good for a walk along the shoreline.

This community swimming pool offers a refreshing haven to the people living in this area of the Cape Flats. It has been around for almost 60 years and offers many children’s activities to keep families busy during summer. It can accommodate up to 617 patrons at a time.

The facility can accommodate a maximum of 511 patrons, it includes a 50-metre main pool, a 5-metre children's pool and a 10-metre splash pool. On-duty lifeguards ensure the safety of swimmers. The venue has disability access and picnic areas and ablution facilities with showers and changing rooms.

The facility can accommodate a maximum of 926 patrons, and includes one main pool for serious swimmers and one children's pool.

Walter Sisulu Drive | Khayelitsha | +27 (0)21 367 0909

This venue offers both a main swimming pool of 50 metres and a 25-metre kiddies pool and can accommodate 926 people. There are picnic facilities, a playground, a kiosk and ablution facilities with showers and change rooms. Safe swimming is ensured by the presence of lifeguards. This is an ideal venue for a summer day of family leisure activities.

Vulindlela is a great place to cool off if you live in Gugulethu and surrounds. It can accommodate up to 700 people in the 38-metre main pool and the 15-metre children’s pool. Bring a picnic basket to enjoy a full day on the grassy banks. There are change rooms and showers on site.

This swimming pool complex offer one 50-metre main pool, a 10-metre children's pool and a shallow pool for babies. There are grassed areas for relaxing and picnicking, a first aid station and a kiosk.

The Blue Downs indoor heated swimming pool has 10 swimming lanes, ideal for those who want to do both leisurely laps or get a serious workout. There is space for 576 people on the seating stands, while the facility can comfortably accommodate 950 people. can comfortably enjoy the facilities. It is frequently used by swimming professionals for training and sports events in the Blue Downs area.

Kensington Swimming Pool plays a big part in the community of Kensington's recreational activities and options. The venue includes a pool for adults, a pool for kids and a beautiful grass area to laze around on a warm summer’s day.

This facility offers a 33.3-metre main swimming pool, a kiddies pool of 9 metres, plus ablution facilities with change rooms and showers and a first aid room. Ample grassy areas make for a relaxed day of swimming, picnicking and relaxing on a summer's day.

Strand is not just home to a wonderful beachfront, but is also where you can find an indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool and a kiddies' pool. It is located next to the Pavilion and can accommodate up to 600 people.

The ideal location for families to cool down and enjoy a day of entertainment. The facility, which caters for 1200 people, offers a 33.3-metre large pool, a kiddies’ pool, a tennis court and a volleyball court. Ablution facilities include change rooms and showers and lifeguards are on duty to ensure everyone's safety.

With its 33.3-metre main pool and a 10-metre kiddies' pool, picnic facilities, changing rooms and showers and on-duty lifeguards, this swimming complex takes up to 1200 people and is a popular recreational venue among locals.  
Opening hours: Monday–Sunday: 10am–4pm until 2 February 2019.

Olifant Street | Manenberg | +27 (0)21 637 4374

This water park offers great fun and entertainment for the family. The park is tucked away in a grassy, forested nook protected from the sometimes ‘unfriendly southeaster’. The venue boasts five slides of varying size and thrill levels, an extensive land play area with a jungle gym and mini zip line. There’s a cafe on the premises offering simple but tasty food and refreshments. For a fabulous day of wholesome family fun, visit Waterworld in Strand.
Hours: Tuesday–Friday, 1pm–6pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9am–6pm, school holidays and public holidays, daily 9am–6pm. Closed on Christmas Day, 25 December.

This swimming pool – 48 metres – in Woodstock is large enough to accommodate 150 swimmers at the same time. And, there’s a smaller 22-metre children’s pool. There is a grassed area where you can sit or lie down and enjoy a picnic

Just off Willow Road in Observatory is where you'll find this public swimming pool that is a firm favourite of the residents, especially students. This venue offers two pools to splish-splash in. Adults can swim laps in the 33-metre long main pool, while the little water babies can splash in the shallow kiddies pool. This facility boasts a grassy area where families can sit and soak up the rays. 
Opening hours: Monday–Sunday (October to April): 10am–5pm.

This public swimming pool facility comprises a 50-metre pool – often used for training for both school children and serious athletes – as well as a 15-metre children's pool, with a lifeguard on duty. There is ample parking, a large lawn, a grandstand and a kiosk. 
Opening hours: Monday–Friday, 6:15am–5pm; Saturday 7:30am–5:45 pm.

This public swimming pool is set in the Westridge area of Mitchells’ Plain and competes for attention with the many other public swimming pool spots in the region. Westridge swimming pool is said to be the best of the bunch. The facility has two pools; an adult pool that’s 1,5m deep and a baby pool. The venue includes a large lawn for picnics and games to make the day-out extra fun. There are also changing rooms, showers and a kiosk for snacks and drinks.

This is a complex on Rosmead Avenue that can accommodate 525 people. It includes a 30-metre main pool for those more familiar with swimming in the deep end and also an 11-metre children’s pool for the little ones to enjoy a splash. It also has a wonderful play area for children, as well as an ablution facility with change rooms and showers, all at your disposal.
Opening hours: Monday–Saturday: 10am–5pm.

This swimming pool is a family favourite for picnics and special outings for those living in and visiting the area. The facility has two separate swimming pools. The baby pool is conveniently situated at the back of the venue area where parents observe their little ones enjoying a little splash. There is also a bigger pool with a diving board for more experienced swimmers. For children under 9 years of age,  there is a trampoline to enjoy.
