Experimental space with live music, dinner, vinyls on sale + meditation classes
Last updated: Thursday, 10 March 2022
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Imagine the sound of waves crashing against the sand, friends bonding over a beer while playing chess, jazz music in the air. Now open your eyes: you’re in The Commons. This experimental space in Muizenberg is the definition of good vibes; it has an affordable vegan menu and live music sessions.

When you walk into the restaurant, you will be immediately struck by the comfortable yet moody vibe. This is contrasted by a huge bright mural on one wall. There’s a balcony that stretches alongside the restaurant, boasting gorgeous views of Muizenberg beach (you can even catch a glimpse of the colourful changing huts). The sunsets from this spot are breathtaking.

“Nothing brings people together like good food.” This is the inspiration behind the menu at The Commons. It is mostly vegan, with some options that include dairy and egg. It offers a great variety of dishes for any time of the day, such as tofu scramble for breakfast to seaweed pasta or Kimchi fried rice for lunch or dinner. Bonus: everything on the menu is under R100.

The Commons is dedicated to creating an inclusive platform for the arts. Different live performances are hosted each week in this space, from music and poetry to talks. You can dance to a vinyl session, take part in a poetry night or listen to some of the most talented local musicians and bands.

If you’re in a shopping mood, Analog Books and Records has a great selection to add to your collection. Something interesting always pops up in these crates, anything from pre-loved books to some classic vinyls. This artsy nook is open at any time for you to browse and buy. Note: some of the items are not for sale, so check with the personnel before falling in love with a specific item.
Analog Books and Records also sells artworks from time to time. Image: Analog Books and Records
Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a beginner, The Commons offers some great classes in its studio space. Join sessions of yoga, movement meditation, song meditation, pilates and even drumming. Classes range from R80-R120. You can book ahead or just drop by.
