Anything and everything will be made fun of in Juliet Jenkin’s new satire
7 Things To Do This Weekend: Cheap And Something For The Kids
Plus a crazy choral satire in the CBD and laughs galore
We have events that’ll suit what’s left in your bank account like a free street takeover in Woodstock, a strange wine pairing in Stellenbosch, a comedy festival at the Baxter and a play called Woolworths. Plus next week, once the salary comes in, we have a zany tea party where you’ll be throwing hats and a beer festival with home brews you’ve never tasted before.
#Pickoftheweek: The Slave Route Challenge
See Bo Kaap, District 6 and the entire city’s history in a new light while on a run. The surroundings will be colourful and there are also koesisters on the route. Even if you’re not running, you can still come out to support the runners and enjoy the finish line festivities at the Slave Route Challenge 2020.
2. Woolworths At The Courtyard Playhouse
An insomniac, a shopaholic, a wannabe American and a woman desperate to get married share a haunted house. What comes next is a dark and humorous satire about middle class South African life at the Courtyard Playhouse called Woolworths.
3. Mother City Comedy Festival
More than 45 comedians performing 40 shows over three weeks. It’s a comedy feast at the Baxter theatre with the likes of Nik Rabinowitz, The Brothers Streep, Wayne Mckay and Stuart Taylor at the Mother City Comedy Festival.
4. Open Streets Woodstock
Sunday, 23 February
A section of Woodstock Main Road is going to be blocked off for cyclists, skaters, dancers and any other kind of street performers to take over. There will also be food stalls and other goodies, and it’s free to go to Open Streets.
5. A Fun-Filled Family Weekend (Festival Style)
Friday, 21 February to Sunday, 23 February
This family-friendly event is an entertaining camping weekend for the entire family along the Olifants River. There will be live music accompanied by pop-up theatres, an animal garden, craft activities, canoeing and more at the Wolfie Familie Weekend.
6. Polkadraai And Popcorn
Friday, 21 February
It’s an anti-serious wine pairing. Make your way to Stellenbosch Hills wine estate and prepare to have your sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and pinotage paired with gourmet popcorn. For the popcorn flavours, think: coconut and chia seed, salted caramel cinnamon and pretzel, or dark chocolate. R55 gets you a full pairing experience at Polkadraa and Popcorn.
7. The Galileo Open Air Theatre
Friday, 21 February
Emelia Clarke steps out of her Khaleesi guise in this romantic comedy about a quirky woman who accepts a new job caring for a paralyzed millionaire. Bring your partner for some romance under the stars with Me Before You at The Galileo Open Air Cinema.
