DON’T MISS THIS BRIGHT ORANGE ASIAN EATERY 

Hello Asia isn’t hard to miss. The bright orange building on Sea Point Main Road, which will be opening 23 January, is an Asian grocer and restaurant. Along with yummy meals like chicken fried rice and steamed bao buns, customers can buy products like instant ramen, sauces and cute cutlery sets. 

Must-try: Test your tolerance for spice with Buldak instant noodles.

BE A NINJA OR VIKING FOR THE DAY

​​Axe-throwing is all the rage right now, and so are knives, ninja stars and crossbows. There's a badass adult party collective that brings the battleground, weapons and targets to you and your crew. All you need is to do is show up and be open to trying something new with Weapons on Wheels.

HEALTH IS WEALTH AT THIS CAFE

Pop by the new double-storey Okja Cafe in Kloof Street. With a new and dreamy cookie factory, you can enjoy freshly baked cookies and vegan croissants over a creamy cup of coffee. The name is officially pronounced OAK-JAH, but “ok-ja” has a good ring to it. Experience the goodness of their products both in Camps Bay and in Kloof. With plant-based dog treats, Okja is a delight for furry friends too.

DINE IN STYLE AT BREE’S NEWEST SPOT 

Amber is an elegant eatery that has just opened on Bree Street. With green velvet chairs and a galaxy wall with gold embellishments, this classy restaurant has a seasonal menu influenced by cuisine from around the world. It also has a shady outdoor area, which makes it a great spot to sip on summer cocktails. Make sure to visit on a Sunday, as Amber hosts Raise the Roof Sundays with live DJs and an exclusive tapas menu. 

Must-try: The sesame cured yellowtail or wild mushroom risotto

STAR-STUDDED NEW MUSIC FEST IS COMING TO TOWN

Timeless Festival is bringing top-tier acts to SA in March 2023, less than 2 hours from Cape Town. Catch Grammy-nominated electronic producer Tycho, two-time Grammy-nominated Norwegian duo Röyksopp and Berlin-based heavyweight duo Booka Shade. POP BY THIS CAFÉ WITH AN ALL-DAY COCKTAIL BAR

In the heart of Stellenbosch, tucked between wine bars and art galleries, you’ll find a new Italian breakfast café with freshly baked chocolate croissants and creamy burrata with a bed of greens. But that’s not all – it also has a cocktail bar with cocktail nights every Wednesday to Saturday. Sophia Eatery has neutral, sophisticated colours that will make you feel right at home.

DISCOVER GOURMET CRÊPES IN PAARL

Prepare to taste crêpes like you never have before at Francis Crêperie and Pizzeria. Their gourmet crêpes are rolled into a cone shape and filled to the brim, so you know you’re getting the most toppings. For those who have less of a sweet tooth, they also sell sourdough pizza. Order a few different slices and taste a variety of delicious cheesy pizzas.

SIP COCKTAILS BY THIS ROOFTOP BAR

The Station House in Sea Point is pushing the Atlantic Seaboard dining experience to the next level. Besides the stunningly popular Sonny and Irene (read below), it is now home to a new cocktail lounge and rooftop bar, The Nines. Think gorgeous sea views, epic sunsets and dazzling cocktails. It has a variety of dishes to choose from, including some decadent desserts.

Must-try: The Seafood Risotto, served with White Tiger Prawns, Patagonian Baby Squid, Seabass, Saldanha Bay Black Mussels, Pomodoro and Mascarpone

TRY ASIAN TAPAS + COCKTAILS

Taste everything from Chinese Dim Sum to Japanese Teriyaki at this Asian-inspired tapas bar. Soi Bar, which opened mid-October 2022, has quickly become the new Instagrammer moment, with its funky neon lights, rose wall and stunning food and drinks. You won’t want to miss the Apollo cocktail (tequila and mango) that comes with its own little Astronaut. 

Must-try: The dumplings or potstickers for starters and the Wok Tossed Teriyaki Ribs for mains. And definitely the Apollo or Rose Bath cocktails.

DRINK WHISKEY SOURS AT THIS RUSTIC BAR

This new bar has taken over the space of the old Bombay Bicycle Club. Cargo has mastered the all-day bar culture with its hearty breakfast specials and late night cocktail vibe. It has an edgy old school nature, with old army memorabilia, moody decor and a wall full of black and white pictures. It’s the kind of place where you can have breakfast or lunch and stay for a whiskey sour or an Old Fashioned. 

Must-try: Fried chicken burger with BBQ sauce with a classic Negroni. And for dessert, Bombay Cigars (phyllo with chocolate, honey + vanilla ice-cream).

ROADTRIP FOR AN OUTDOOR DINING EXPERIENCE 

Just 30 minutes outside of Mossel Bay, you’ll find this new gem that is perfect for the summer months. Voerkraal has the look and feel of an old school tuckshop, splashed with beach vibes. It serves all the South African comfort foods from vetkoek and “geroosterde brood” to burgers, viennas, hearty breakfasts and Steri Stumpies. Plus, you can buy succulents from R20 onsite.

CELEBRATE FINE-DINING WITH ZULU CUISINE 

You’ll be inspired by Emazulwini, a modern Zulu-inspired restaurant, which celebrates Nguni cuisine and South African ingredients. Emerging from the kitchens of top fine dining restaurants, owner Mmabatho Molefe stepped out on her own with a tiny restaurant at Makers Landing where she presents traditional Zulu cuisine in a fine dining context. It is currently being revamped – so get ready for its launch on the 10th of November 2022.

MEET THE JOKER AT THIS ECLECTIC COUTURE GALLERY

Comic book style murals, a life-sized Joker, a tattoo studio and luxury couture – that’s the Rare Gallery experience. Inside the cerulean-framed door of Rare are highly sought-after MediCom toy figures Bearbricks, limited edition works from Brooklyn-based artist KAWS and couture from culture-shifting Off-White. STEP INTO A DUNGEON COFFEE SHOP

Situated in the underrated Riebeeck Street, you’ll find a little black hole in the wall, guarded by an iron gate with the sign “Dungeon Coffee & Co”. This garage-turned-coffee-shop, styled with minimalist imperfections, opened on 10 October. It was made for coffee fanatics – by coffee fanatics, with a range of coffee, iced drinks, classic koesisters and, if you’re early enough, gourmet sandwiches (limited amount per day). Plus, if you’re a student you can get 20% off with a valid student card. 

Must-try: Keep an eye out for the Summer delights – Dungeon on Ice (think iced strawberry rooibos drinks).

PARTY IN A LUXURIOUS LOUNGE

Long street is known for its vibrant nightlife scene, and now, you have another club to add to your weekend (or weekday) benders. Clubnovella is “a premium experience,” with its luxurious decor, moody lighting and laser shows, and of course, some epic DJ’s like Camidoh, Raffa and more.

TRY RICH NORTHERN ITALIAN DISHES 

There’s a new Italian kid on the block, and she’s serving up the works. Loco specialises in Northern Italian cuisines (think hearty meat dishes like grilled pork belly or fresh red snapper), and has a wood-fired pizza oven, adding to the rustic ambience of exposed-brick walls, leather booths and hanging plants. Plus, it has a stunning outside terrace overlooking Kloof Street.

Must-try: The tagliatelle al filetto & fungi served with beef fillet, mix mushroom, cream sauce

GET SOME VITAMIN SEA 

This rustic (and very blue) eatery in Mossel Bay specialises in “from-the-grill” and seafood dishes. Sit on the outside deck at Blaize and Barrel and try the Vitamin Sea menu with prawn curry and fresh line-fish. Or something from the land like a blaize burger (vegetarian options available), nachos or steaks. There’s even a selection of sweet options, like KitKat and M&M pancakes or Mississippi mud pies. Plus, do a wine tasting in the wine emporium room.

INDULGE IN AMERICAN-STYLE COOKIES

Cookie Co, home of the original American-style cookie in Johannesburg has come to Cape Town. Their cookie flavours are constantly being updated, with a “cookie of the month,” like milk tart or lemon meringue. Pair them with a coffee for the ultimate morning pick-me-up, or indulge in one of the rich, creamy, ice-cream flavour. For the sweet tooths out there, there’s a wide selection of local and imported sweets and treats.

SIP SUNDOWNERS ON THESEN ISLAND

Located inside The Boatshed, a maritime heritage building on Thesen Island in Knysna, is The Lofts. This family-owned hotel has just opened Nest restaurant that overlooks Knysna Lagoon. In the morning try caramel pulled beef brisket eggs benedict with freshly squeezed OJ. Or go for sundowners and fresh seafood with some of the best sunset views Knysna has to offer.

DINE ON GREEK FOODS

Sea Point’s most popular Greek restaurant, Mykonos, has opened its doors in Claremont. It is located just outside of Cavendish Square on the corner of Vineyard Road and Cavendish Street. Try classic Greek dishes like moussaka, shawarma or meat skewers with a selection of wines, while the kids can jol at the kiddies play area. 

Must-try: The Yuvetsi (traditional Greek pasta rice) or baby chicken

EXPLORE LUSH GARDENS AT A WAGON HOUSE 

This new eatery is situated in an original wagon house, built in the late 19th century. There’s ample light flowing in from the windows, a large terrace filled with pops of colour and is surrounded by lush gardens. The menu is just as delectable: There’s beef and bone-marrow burgers and scrambled duck eggs on toasted brioche. Guests are invited to linger, taste and purchase superb wines and explore the surroundings with a picnic (you can pre-order a basket).

This new ice-cream truck serves Two Scoops of Happiness… because one is never enough. Pair your ice-cream flavour of choice from a simple sugar-cone to a bubble waffle, waffle fries, even a waffle stick and tacos. Or you can make it a milkshake. They also offer cotton candy, toffee apples, ice-cream cakes and cupcakes, all from their strictly halaal, mobile food truck (which you can hire for any event).

DRINK BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS WITH SHISHA

Café Nova is the new coffee shop in town, and it has opened in style. It has a minimalist, French vibe with black and white chequered floors, plush green chairs, sleek white nooks and small marble tables. It offers everything from hot coffees to milkshakes, with croissants, muffins and panini sandwiches. Plus, every Friday and Saturday you can enjoy some hubbly bubbly and bottomless mimosas. 

Must-try: The classic iced-coffee, it is served with chocolate sauce and sprinkles.

BE INSPIRED BY THIS DYNAMIC SPACE

Artezian is an art gallery, lounge and sushi bar all in one. It features work from artists across the country. The cocktail menu has been curated by Roxanne Read, and Maruwaan, founder of Sushi Fundi, is the resident sushi chef. Resident DJ Erefaan Pearce, who plays house music, provides the after-dinner vibes.

SIP WINE AT THIS STYLISH BAR

Bertha’s Wine has recently opened a wine bar in Stellenbosch. It is tucked between art galleries and cafés like the popular Meraki in Church Street, across from the Moederkerk. There are various wines and tasting options available, as well as some small snack plates like Plankie Steak or Salmon Trout.

SAVOUR SOUTH INDIAN TAPAS DISHES

With roots deeply founded in Kerala, India – better known as “The Land of Spices” – owner Seelan Sundoo has created a menu for diners to taste authentic South Indian dishes. There’s briyanis, smokey, traditional Tandooris, Nepalese steamed dumplings, clay oven curries and more. The meals are designed as tapas to be savoured and shared, which you can now try at the newest branches in Newlands and Woodstock.

TASTE LOUISIANA-INSPIRED FOODS

This popular Joburg restaurant has opened a new branch at Eden on the Bay in Blouberg. Louise and Anna serves food influenced by the cultures of Louisiana, from gumbo and jambalaya to scrumptious beignets. The restaurant is filled with light from neon signs all around (even on the ceiling)

Must-try: The Philly cheese steak sandwich.

SHOP ASIAN SWEETS AT THIS HOT PINK SHOP

Walk up the stairs of this hidden spot, painted from floor to ceiling in hot pink, and you’ll be surprised at what you find at the top: Goods from America and various regions in Pacific and Southeast Asia including China, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan. From Lady Boba Taiwanese bubble tea and Mooncakes to Poptarts, Japanese Mochi, laffy taffy and more. Plus they even stock a range of beauty products.

COMING SOON: A PASTA BAR

Decadent pastas, fried stewed beef balls, truffle lollipops and a cracking tiramisu are just some of the things to look forward to when Scala Pasta Bar opens on 15 September. In collaboration with Michelin star chef Luciano Monosilio, Scala is bringing the textures and flavours from Rome to Heritage Square.

Must-try: Monosilio’s famous carbonara. If you have a sweet tooth, the tiramisu is not to be missed (you have to crack it open with a spoon).

STOP BY THIS PIZZA JOINT

Yes, Crusted Pizza serves all the classics, but there’s some with a twist. Try the Basic (which is everything but basic) - this adventurous pizza is topped with biltong, figs, and brie. SIT WITH THE COOL KIDS AT A TRENDY RESTAURANT

They say blondes have more fun, and that’s definitely the case with this new kid on Kloof Street. With its friendly environment, Mediterranean-inspired food, affordable prices and fun decor, this space is becoming a firm favourite.
