First Thursdays officially returns to our streets on 3 September. Experience the first pan African LGBTQI exhibition at Nel Gallery or find inspiration in Abe Opperman’s summer exhibition. Top it all off with a glass of wine from Leo’s Wine Bar.
WHAT'S NEW IN THE CAPE TOWN ART SCENE
Get up to speed with the young and up-in-coming artists of Cape Town. The Inner City Cartel building has swapped out their office space and traded it in for their First Thursdays Connect group exhibition. You can expect walls adorned with carefully-curated pieces from local artists.

THE FIRST PAN AFRICAN LGBTQI EVENT. EVER.
The Nel Gallery, with Pride Afrique, is hosting a group exhibition that is the first of its kind. An exhibition dedicated solely to the pan African LGBTQI community entitled, On Pride and Africa.

Hot Days Cool Books’ pop-up bookstore, is open for First Thursdays. Here you'll find a range of hard to find second-hand art and design books that the store owners, Meghan and Daniel, have found just for you. Pop in for a visit at their pop-up store in Wale Street or you can reach out via Instagram.

WINE TASTINGS LED BY EXPERTS
Leo's Wine Bar reopened on 2 September, and it makes a great pitstop on your First Thursdays route. It’s a wine bar inside a bagel shop, where you can discover wines from some of the most interesting and unique producers in the Western Cape. While you’re there, don't forget to try the delicious (and very Instagrammable) pizza bagels from Leo's Wine Bar.

IT'S GIN O'CLOCK
Why wouldn't you want to spend First Thursday at a hidden speakeasy? Step into Honest Chocolate Café, and maybe grab a sweet treat on the way through to the Mediterranean-style courtyard. Here you'll find The Gin Bar, long-standing meeting point for First Thursdays. Sip on delectable gin cocktails while you unwind and start your weekend one day early.

WE'RE ALL IN LOCKDOWN TOGETHER
The Abe Opperman Gallery is showcasing their brand new summer exhibition both online and in their gallery in De Waterkant. If you take a closer look at all the art, you'll notice that the gallery only sells pieces from the owner, Abe Opperman. Plus, with not a copy or print in sight gallery curator, Ben Theron says that “all the pieces are unique”.
When: 1 September-31 December, Monday to Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday, 9am-1pm.
COFFEE, MUFFINS AND EXQUISITE LOCAL ART
The Ladder on 136 is a working café and art studio run by practising artists Nicholas and Anastasia. For the whole of September, they’re showcasing a ceramics exhibition by Ouma Esterhuizen in collaboration with her son, Anton Esterhuizen. Pop in to view the works and grab a coffee and a muffin to go.
When: Monday to Friday, 7:30am-4pm and Saturday, 8:30am-1pm throughout September
