Something New this First Thursday: Art, Coffee And Delectable Food on Strand
A coffee-fuelled micro-gallery for upcoming artists with fresh, free-range and organic meals and smoothie bowls to add to your First Thursday must-do list
One of our favourite recent discoveries on Strand Street, Ground Art Caffe, nurtures local young or upcoming artists who need help breaking into the art industry. On any given day, Ground Art gives artists the opportunity to exhibit their work. And, in true inner-city Cape Town fashion, that all goes into overdrive when First Thursdays roll around.
Art gallery walkabouts and exhibits happen on First Thursdays, and many galleries in the CBD participate. But there’s also an element of fun, getting out and real value on First Thursday as restaurants offer great drinks and food specials.
Ground Art Caffe brings it all together: This 4th-wave coffee specialist with wholesome good-food kitchen also features a micro-gallery. They host art exhibitions that open with a new event every First Thursday from 6pm–9pm. And here’s why you should add them to your First Thursday walkabout:
WATCH: FIRST THURSDAYS AT GROUND ART CAFFE
Ground Art Caffe approaches art the same way an established gallery would, with a featured artist in a solo show. Occasionally they also exhibit emerging or more established artists. To see who’s exhibiting, check out their art blog, and if you like what you see, you can shop their collections at their online art store.
“We believe that we have made art more approachable to the public. Our welcoming atmosphere means our artists get exposed to a wider audience. And that, in turn, creates a whole new range of art collectors,” says Lisa Cormack-Thomson, curator and co-owner of Ground Art Caffe.
ABOUT THE ART CURATOR
Lisa’s background is in architecture and now, through a love of art and empowering youth, she has ventured into art curating. Her extensive experience in business, creativity and nurturing relationships with artists ensures successful exhibitions. Come see for yourself.
And Ground Art Caffe is more than a place for art enthusiasts, it’s home to excellent 4th-wave coffee and food whose presentation is something of an artwork in itself.
COME FOR THE ART, STAY FOR THE COFFEE AND FOOD
You can expect delicious and wholesome beautifully plated eats. Think smoothie bowls, pastries, breakfasts, cakes, light meals and vegan and vegetarian options, all prepared from scratch using fresh and flavoursome organic, ethical and free-range ingredients.
Head chef and family friend Glen Clark began his love affair with food while he was in school and went on to study at the renowned Prue Leith Chef Academy in Pretoria. His work experience has taken him from the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton to the Relais & Châteaux Camp Jabulani.
Even if you’ve missed Ground Art Caffe this time around on First Thursdays, remember they’re open for breakfast, lunch, light meals and amazing 4th-wave coffee, 7am–4 pm on Mondays to Fridays and 7am–2pm on Saturdays.
