Explore the city and surrounds on a wild goose chase with colleagues
Forget the motivational pep talk to get things going at work. Head out for a day of adventure, exploring, learning and plenty of laughter instead.
Let’s be frank. After the festive season’s… well, festivities, it’s difficult to get back into the swing of all things week and work. Taking your team out for a day of fun is just the thing to get everybody re-energised and ready for 2018. It’s a new year so why not try something completely different? The Gallivanting Goose offers the ultimate team building activity, best described as a wild goose chase meets a scavenger hunt… and makes for the most fun you’re likely to have this year.
HOW THE GALLIVANTING GOOSE GAME WORKS
Games take place at various locations in and around the city, including the V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Hout Bay and the Company’s Garden. A standard game is 90 minutes and requires a minimum of 15 players to participate. Players are arranged into teams (the number of players per team depends on group dynamics, objectives etc.). Each team is then given a smart device that has the game app, which features various challenges to complete, on it. Teams are then challenged to complete all the tasks described in the app for that particular location.
The game is controlled from a central point at the chosen location by somebody from The Gallivanting Goose, and teams are scored based on challenges completed – adding to the live scoreboard and the competition. Factors like originality, clarity of photo, creativity and interpretation of the brief all affect the score, so it’s not just about who completes the game in the fastest time. Every challenge is set up such that teams can take it however far they want to (within public decency, including safety, reason etc., of course). Founder Larissa Sparg explains: “Everyone who plays, regardless of seniority, position or personality are on equal footing when taking part, as the game brings out all sorts of characteristics and skills one does not usually get to see in the workplace or in everyday interactions.”
A challenge is completed when the team submits a video or photo on the app that shows the “answer” to the challenge. This must be done before they can move on to the next challenge. The question, Larissa says, is whether you’re collectively smart enough to outsmart the smartest of the teams?
Further value (and laughs) comes at the end of the game, when teams receive the photos they took during the game to keep. They get a chance to reflect on the activities, from the strategies,to the mishaps and victories, while also getting a chance to laugh – at themselves and colleagues a long time after the game has ended. Not surprisingly, this offers interesting insights into team dynamics within a given group, as well as individual strengths and weaknesses.
