The Grand Café & Beach will host the exhibition launch of the I Was Shot Foundations’ Cape Town initiative. The NGO equips underprivileged children with disposable cameras then exhibits Cape Town through their perspective.
“Eight inspiring months after we began the I Was Shot in Cape Town programme, we are excited to conclude with the first photographic exhibition in September. As Capetonians celebrate the beginning of a new season, we celebrate the end of a fantastic chapter of new beginnings having been created for this talented group,” says project coordinator Sivo Gluck.
To compliment the exhibition and the Grand’s stunning views of Table Bay 10 children from the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s empowerment programme will provide a soulful soundtrack.
I Was Shot in Cape Town consists of two training periods working with 19 youths per group in weekly sessions. The second training phase continues until the end of December 2011.
The first training session consisted of an introductory course teaching the basics of photography to cultivate an interest in the art and to enhance their visual literacy. The second phase consists of in-depth photography training which enables the young men to take photographs with proper digital cameras along with computer literary and post production skills.
There’s always plenty of arts and culture to bolster the soul in Cape Town, after all it’s a finalist for the 2014 World Design Capital and September means its Creative Week Cape Town.
