Join in the festivities as the 50-piece Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town and the Solid Brass Quintet perform a selection of Christmas and festive songs at the Carols by Candlelight evening at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre on Friday, 14 December 2012. The choral group, one of Cape Town’s oldest and best-loved, has been described by a local newspaper as “the jewel in Cape Town’s musical crown”.
Originating in Australia in the 19th century, carols by candlelight has become a popular event that has become tradition in many parts of the world around Christmas. So, this year, “deck the halls” and join in as the festive choir delivers age-old favourites and gives new life to the Christmas carols many of us grew up with.
The Cape Town choir will be accompanied by the Solid Brass Quintet that promises to bring a fresh spirit, musicality and virtuosity to the evening. The five-strong group was formed in 1986 by members of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Regularly performing across South Africa, the band has become one of the biggest names in the brass fraternity and has performed worldwide.
Friendly V&A Waterfront staff and ushers will be handing out special non-drip candles at the event but carollers are encouraged to bring their own candleholders. The show will start promptly at 7pm.
Get there early (from 6pm) to catch popular Cape Town radio station KFM 94.5 doing its final Christmas Wish giveaway. This initiative allows listeners to call in and tell the station about family, friends or colleagues who need a bit of joy in their lives and whose wishes are made true by donors.

Furthermore, if you’re stuck for things to do in Cape Town during the festive season have a gander at the December entertainment at the V&A Waterfront and the annual December events.
