Local event organisers band together to bring some fun back to an open field near you (plus, support creatives)
Drive-ins are back, perhaps more out of necessity than nostalgia during lockdown, but we’re sure it’ll be a hit for those who are missing their movie outings, or those looking for a unique experience outside of the house.
FROM BLOCKBUSTERS TO MUSICAL ACTS
A group of local event organisers are bringing the drive-in experience to Cape Town very soon. Mother City Drive-in will host movie screenings, from new releases to the classics, which you’ll enjoy from the safety of your car. Besides films, the drive-in will also feature live comedy nights and musical performances.
The aim is to create a safe environment in which to support artists and the creative industry, co-founder of Mother City Drive-In Lyle Masters told Cape Talk in a recent interview.
COMING SOON TO AN OPEN SPOT NEAR YOU
Masters said the goal is to be a mobile drive-in so that they can move around to different areas in the city. But the first movie night will launch at a set venue to begin with.
Unlike in the heyday of drive-ins, the sound (broadcasted directly to your car) will be crystal clear and the screens are high quality. According to Masters, they’ll even be able to show movies while the sun is up.
Strict social distancing practices will be implemented and all the staff will wear PPE.
A date and venue for the first event will be announced soon.
TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE
As the Mother City Drive-in waits for certain regulations to be lifted and gets ready to put on its first event, they have now released vouchers on Webtickets for fans to pre-book.
The tickets cost between R99-R349, and will be charged according to the size and type of your vehicle with certain passenger limitations, or you can add a passenger for an extra R99. Children under 12 get in for free (excluding the booking fee). It's important that we note that vouchers are non-refundable.
