The popular Newlands Spring is open once again since lockdown began, but with a few safety measures in place, including a number of taps being removed to ensure social distancing.
OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK
The spring, situated on the northern side of the Newlands Swimming Pool, near the Dean Street Shopping Centre, is open every day of the week from 5am to 9pm. The spot is known for its high-quality water and was a sought-after water source during the peak of Cape Town’s water crisis in 2018. Even though the city has recovered, many people still continue to make use of the spring.
SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE IN PLACE
There will be eight taps (out of the 16 available) open to allow for social distancing, and security will be there to manage the queues, parking and other Covid-19 regulations, according to the City of Cape Town. Hand sanitiser will be available at the spring entrance.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO STAY SAFE
To ensure everyone’s safety, the following rules need to be followed, says the City:
You are limited to a maximum of 25 litres at a time to prevent backlogs You cannot enter the site without a mask
Make sure you keep 1.5m distance from others at all times
Sanitise your hands when you enter the site
Open and close the taps with the back of your hands
Ensure that your container does not touch the tap
Take note that this water is not treated, so the City cannot guarantee that it’s safe for drinking.

If you live close to Vredehoek, get your water from the Bradwell Spring.
Keep up to date with Cape Town’s dam levels.
After you’ve fetched your water, there are plenty of other things to do this week.
This is what you can get up to during lockdown level 3.
