Travel gurus Lonely Planet rate the Mother City as the second greatest city to explore in 2017
Last Updated: 25 October 2016
Accredited travel guide book – the largest in the world, in fact – Lonely Planet has officially released its Best in Travel 2017 list, and our gorgeous metropolis is sitting pretty in the number 2 slot. While its number 1 in our minds, Cape Town lost out to Bordeaux in France for the coveted top spot.

According to Lonely Planet:
“Cape Town’s deceptively laid-back folk have been working hard to add cultural and culinary cred to the Mother City’s famous natural charms, cementing its reputation as an African city with a global outlook.
Local gastronomy is as impressive as Table Mountain’s flat-topped mass, with historic wine estates in every direction, hip markets selling the fruits of the Cape’s fertile terrain, and inventive restaurants winning global plaudits.
The art and design scene will be given a boost in September by the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), the world’s largest museum of contemporary African art and a post-industrial architectural marvel occupying a century-old grain silo.”

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2017 List:
1. Bordeaux, France
2. Cape Town, South Africa
3. Los Angeles, USA
4. Merida, Mexico
5. Ohrid, Macedonia
6. Pistoia, Italy
7. Seoul, South Korea
8. Lisbon, Portugal
9. Moscow, Russia
10. Portland, USA
This isn’t the first time this year the Mother City has appeared on a best cities or destinations list. You might remember when our pretty city was titled number one in the category Top Cities in Africa and the Middle East at the Travel + Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards as well as voted as the Best Overseas City for Restaurants and Bars by The Conde Nast Reader’s Travel Awards 2016. Furthermore, Cape Town is also a finalist in the 2016 C40 Cities Awards taking place in December 2016.
You don’t need us to remind you how incredible the city of Cape Town really is!
