Craft beer and a cigar alley at Stellenbosch’s smallest bar

Cuban cigars, handcrafted beer and old-Western decor at Blix Tavern

In the bustling Dorp Street, under the acorn trees, is the smallest bar in Stellenbosch. With Old-Western decor, craft beers and a hidden cigar alley, Blix Tavern mimics an Out of Africa aesthetic and sells the cigars to boot.

SOAK UP THE RUSTIC VIBE

Blix Tavern is one of the oldest streets in South Africa, filled with Dutch-style buildings. You’ll see hunting trophies, large clocks, polo sticks and old photographs on the walls. It’s the kind of space where the barman knows your name and pours your drink before you even have to ask.

This gem is rustic but stylish. Inside is the ideal space for a cosy date, and its central location makes it a great spot for a nightcap, which you can take on the verandah where you can watch the action of the street.

TASTE HANDCRAFTED BEER

The name “Blix'' is based on Karen Blixen, the Danish author of the critically acclaimed memoir, which was made into a film, Out of Africa. The tavern serves handcrafted beer from its sister company Blix Beers.

SMOKE CIGARS AND SNACK ON PLATTERS

The cigars are made by a local supplier. There is a wide selection of Cuban and other cigars that cater for all tastes (those who would like to try a cigar, as well as cigar connoisseurs).

While you’re there, order a hot or cold platter. Or opt for the chicken strips and chips with homemade empanadas.
