Stellenbosch’s favourite hidden rock ‘n’ roll bar

Imagine a swanky, rock and roll restaurant and bar with more-ish pizza and cocktails with a twist, with the added bonus of live music by local musos. And that’s why Balboa Balcony Bar is central to Stellenbosch’s small-town nightlife scene.

IT’S PERFECT FOR A NIGHT OUT

The balcony bar, which opened in 2013 and recently celebrated its 8th anniversary, is normally quiet during the day. But at night, Balboa comes alive with rock music by local artists and a buzz of people who flock to the bar for the food and cocktails. 

Although the cocktails keep customers coming back, the crowd puller is also the vibe thanks to the awesome staff.

“We have a solid team that have been with us for years and they are like family to us,” said owner Ramon Corie.

THE FOOD AND DRINKS ARE A HIT, TOO

The bar has an admission age of 23+ and has live music every weekend, featuring some of the best local musicians. Balboa’s pizza is one of the most popular dishes on its menu, says Ramon “They are Neapolitan-style pizza bases. We did a pizza-dough course in Italy. Our dough is slow fermented and absolutely delish! It’s kind on the stomach and won’t leave you feeling heavy after,” says Ramon.

Try the Al Pacino pizza, with beef, cashews and caramelised onions, and pair it with a refreshing Watermelon daiquiri.

KILLER COCKTAILS + SOMETHING FOR THE LADIES

The bar hosts a ladies’ night every Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm. Women can get a free glass of bubbly, along with a refreshing selection of cocktails made to your liking. Balboa also puts a unique twist on classic cocktails, bringing a new twist to your favourite cocktails.

GOOD TO KNOW 

The bar also has an all-seeing plant named Stevie, a yellowwood tree, facing the balcony. 

“It’s the most precious thing in there and all the staff have strict daily routines to keep it alive,” says Ramon.
