When the phrase ‘team building’ pops up in the workplace, it’s usually met with more disdain than enthusiasm, but Battlefield Live SA offers the kind of experience that helps to create a cohesive force of colleagues and show them a seriously good time while doing so.
The laser tag gaming company invites employees to channel their inner Rambo and participate in a simulated military battle while working in teams to complete several missions. The ultimate goal (other than settling some inter-office rivalries) is to build a positive group dynamic and to help participants overcome their fear of failure. They will also learn valuable leadership, communication and strategising skills.
The Cape Town-based combat recreation initiative is owned by former life coach Renar Wheeler, and the outdoorsy Call of Duty-like team-building event is a challenging two-hour session where teams are called on to communicate effectively and strategise in order to complete a number of war missions.
The games usually take place at Wynberg Park in Cape Town, Vergenoegd Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, or Altydgedacht Estate in Tygervalley but the beauty of the battlefield is that the exercise is mobile, so it could even be set up at your work venue or at the site of a large conference or seminar (it makes for a great breakaway activity between workshops and meetings).
The whole exercise is outcome-based, and after each successful (or unsuccessful) game, there’s a debriefing session that looks at the challenges that arose during that particular mission and highlights the lessons that can be learnt from each scenario and how these can be applied to the workplace. Even the least enthusiastic participants will find themselves invigorated by the adrenaline-inducing action, and the buzz that continues after the last infrared bullet has been fired will resonate back at work for several weeks afterwards.
Booking and Pricing Info for Team Building with Battlefield Live SA
Bookings can be made online at Battlefieldlive.co.za or by phoning +27 (0)84 364 9979 or emailing renar@battlefieldlive.co.za. A two-hour team-building session costs R395p/p, and a full-day event including both the game and a halaal spit braai costs R795/p.
Battlefield Live SA can either recommend a venue or companies can have the event at a location of their choice at a negotiated price (there’s a R700 call-out fee for venues that are outside of the city). The activity can accommodate up to 250 participants, with 28 people playing at a time.
Note: Battlefield Live SA events also take place in rainy weather (it helps set the scene) and will only be cancelled in stormy conditions.
