Moms are done with generic gifts of flowers and chocolates for Mother’s Day, this year falling on Sunday, 13 May 2018. But they are still falling for lovely lunches in the winelands or brunches by the sea and in the city.

NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL MOTHER’S DAY DO
Renowned local chef Ntlalo Jordan is hosting a dinner at Guga S’thebe in Langa to celebrate the community that raised him. And he’s doing it with acclaimed DJ Fosta, also from Langa, who, together with live musicians, will add his own flavour with deep-house beats.
The spread: Chef Jordan is making lamb shank with mash and baby veggies and stuffed chicken breast with a thyme jus.
Price: R200/p and R100 for kids over the age of five.

A TASTE OF HOME
This Mother’s day lunch at Oude Werf in Stellenbosch might bring on a bit of nostalgia because you might remember these meals from your own mom’s kitchen.
The spread: Three roasts: Lamb, served with gravy and a homemade mint and onion jam; gammon, in honey and treacle sugar with homemade mustard, and succulent free-range chicken. There'll plenty of sides: roasted potatoes, Jollof rice, the fried rice spiced with nutmeg, cumin and ginger, warmed with chili peppers and stirred through with onions and tomatoes, and boereboontjies, mashed potato-and-green-beans side dish with bacon.

TREATS IN THE STREETS

Both the Ritz’s restaurants have Mother’s Day lunches. CASA’s Glam Lunch with Mum (filling up quickly), and a seven-course meal at Top of The Ritz, the revolving restaurant, limited to 60.
The spread: At CASA is a lavish lunch with a glass of bubbly and live entertainment. The seven-course lunch up top includes entrées of Knysna Oysters. Mains is choice between grilled sirloin or fresh linefish. Dessert is smoked chocolate mousse.
Price: R295 at CASA and R126/p for kids between 6 and 12. Then R850/p at Top of The Ritz, including a glass of bubbles on arrival.

LUNCH ON THE BEACH
Shimmy Beach Club is hosting an a la carte Mother’s Day lunch at an idyllic oceanside setting. To go with the food, wine and sparkling view, there’ll be some other special touches, like the perfume activations by Versace and a complimentary glass of Graham Beck.
The spread: It’s ala carte so all their specialities are on offer, from the black mussels in a garlic and white wine sauce to pizza.

The spread: Roast & Co. has an impressive menu celebrating the chicken, and there are also unique dishes to share, such as chicken Caesar croquettes and baked camembert.

A THEATRICAL CELEBRATION OF MOM
Looking for something a little dramatic? The three-course meal at Stardust is served by performing waiters. There will be multiple starters, mains and desserts all served to your table.
The spread: A choice of three starters, including, springbok carpaccio and smoked salmon. Mains of slow-roasted lamb ribs and a seafood platter, crayfish tails, prawns... the works. Desserts are chocolate torte, sorbet or creme brulee.

A MEAL WITH A MELODY
Good food and good music make for the perfect duo. Cape Town’s favourite New York-inspired revue bar, The Piano Bar, has a three-course meal for the afternoon (or evening) accompanied by live music from local talents.
The spread: There are meat and vegetarian options for both starters and mains. Choose between lemon basil risotto or pulled lamb tacos to start and beef fillet or spinach and ricotta cannelloni for mains.

The spread: There’s a salad station with just about any salad you could think up, plus, the choice of mains is nice.
