Whether you decide to play it safe and opt for a delicious dining experience at a top-notch restaurant or wine farm, or throw caution to the wind and put your colleagues to the test with a fun team building experience, Cape Town has an exciting range of venues and activities on offer sure to suit any office party size and budget.
YEAR END FUNCTION ACTIVITIES IN CAPE TOWN
Grand Africa Café & Beach
This seaside destination in Granger Bay has the potential to sweep you away to a distant tropical world, so it’s an ideal spot to unwind and celebrate after a long, tough work year. Companies can book out anything from a single table on the sand to the entire venue (maximum capacity 1050), depending on their size, and there are a number of options in between. The recently renovated haunt is now home to five bars (one dedicated to cocktails and sparkling wine), an exclusive section with daybeds and a DJ booth, a private beach, an expansive wooden deck and a lofty inside area that marries oceanfront calm with European glamour. An events manager can organise all the details of larger functions, and a number of set menus are available (the Grand Africa Cafe & Beach serves sushi, wood-fired pizza, salads, seafood, burgers and steaks). Do bear in mind that if there are more than 150 employees attending, the whole venue must be booked. It’s also advisable to arrange communal transport for big groups as parking is limited. The good news, though, is that even though the Grand Beach feels like an island far away, it’s well situated near the CBD.

Battlefield Live Laser Tag
This military simulation game is the perfect way to banish the year’s accumulated work stress, and it has the unique appeal of being a team-building to-do that doesn’t look or feel like one. The adrenalin-raising activity employs the use of state-of-the-art infrared weaponry, war paint and daring martial strategies to make sure employees get the blood pumping and forget about deadlines, meetings and that pesky co-worker. The organisers will guide the company through a number of different military scenarios, and regardless of whether staff members are timid or loud-and-proud, we guarantee everyone will have some fully loaded fun. Visitors can choose to go head-to-head in one of three different settings, all of which come with their fair share of scenic beauty, and certain packages include a full halaal spit braai. More specifically, companies can enjoy a full day of Battlefield Live laser tag and spit braai at either the Winery Road Forest in Stellenbosch or the Freedom Hill between Franschhoek and Paarl at a cost of R795p/p, which is inclusive of the venue hire, catering – select from various menus and 2-hours of Battlefield Live activity (a minimum number of 35 people is required for the spit braai). In addition, companies can play a two-hour round at the Wynberg Park costs R395p/p, where no minimum number is required, but there is a maximum of 250 participants allowed (no spit braai option available). Prices include all the necessary get-up and guns.
Bookings can be made online at www.battlefieldlive.co.za or by contacting Renar Wheeler via firstname.lastname@example.org or +27 (0) 84 364 9979.
Located close to many offices in the business hub of Century City, this upmarket American-style smokehouse opens its doors to all kinds of year-end functions. The large venue, which is all polished wood, raw concrete and chequered tiles, can accommodate between two and 200 people across its various connected zones (there’s also a semi-private side room for up to 45 people). Knife offers snack platters and set menus for larger groups, and the latter includes the restaurant’s famous home-smoked baby back ribs. If your company visits between 5pm and 7pm any day of the week, you can also benefit from reduced prices on cocktails, house spirits and Jack Black lager. As the staff at Knife don’t like the word ‘no’, they’ll go out of their way to tailor-make the function to suit specific requests, and will also make arrangements for halaal guests. While the restaurant does not charge a venue hire fee, it does specify a minimum spend.

Then HintHunt, the simple (yeah right!) and fun live escape game is the perfect end-of-year function activity for you and your company. For office groups, HintHunt usually suggests rotating groups who can play the same HintHunt challenge in parallel in the different rooms. In addition, participants can also take part in a variety of other hour-long activities, including the ‘Minute to Win It’ team challenge, a wine and cheese pairing, life coaching meetings as well as a ‘Six Thinking Hats’ session to stimulate creative thinking. HintHunt also boasts a large conference room, business lounge and bar area accommodating 100 people (free Wi-fi and HD projector and screen comes included) as well as on-site catering opportunities. This intimate De Waterkant haunt, which marries a musical revue joint, a bar and a restaurant, is well known as a festive venue for parties. Those wanting to celebrate the end of the work year here can opt to book out the entire venue (it can accommodate around 60 people seated or between 100 and 120 standing) or reserve just one corner or section. There’s the bar area, a music room and an open rooftop lounge, with the latter being ideal for small groups of between 15 and 25 people when the weather is good. Solo artists and bands perform live music every night of the week (you can expect anything from jazz to folk), which always helps to pick up the tempo of a party. Worker bees can tuck into an assortment of tapas and sip on fresh, experimental cocktails. There’s a canape menu available for larger groups, and the chef is also willing to custom-make fare for special occasions. The venue has a projector and PA system for slide shows and speeches, and as the staff are committed to being as accommodating as possible, they’ll do their best to organise everything they can to ensure a memorable year-end function.

Party Boat Cruises
Pack your precious cargo into a sturdy cooler box and raise the anchor to set out on a corporate sunset sail (or booze cruise if you prefer a more apt term). Bond with your fellow workers over a couple of much-anticipated cold ones as your year end function takes to the waters aboard an open party boat. If you don’t have a dinghy, dory or dazzling yacht of your own, various companies in Cape Town (such as the Waterfront Boat Company and the Jolly Roger Pirate Boat) have watercrafts for you to hire or hop on, with options that range from small, luxurious yachts for more intimate parties to an authentic, fully-kitted-out pirate ship (it can carry up to 75 passengers) for a spot of themed fun. Most of the cruises set off regularly from the V&A Waterfront.

Atlantic Steam Train
Let off some pent-up steam from a tough working year and climb aboard the Atlantic Rail steam train for a unique office party day trip. Owing to the Simon’s Town line remaining closed until further notice, the Atlantic Steam Train routes have now changed to trips on the lines of the Cape Winelands. Setting off on select dates each month (see their website for the full schedule), the train sets steam from Cape Town to the Vredenheim Wine Estate, Spier Wine Estate or Stellenbosch. The roundabout trip is roughly a 6 – 7-hour train ride. In order to suit everyone’s pocket, the Atlantic Steam Train offers trips to Stellenbosch at the normal rate of R300 per an adult (R350 in high season) where passengers will have the opportunity to explore the little student town with its quaint shops and historic buildings for approximately 3-hours before returning home. Note your ticket fare only includes your return journey to Stellenbosch. Passengers are welcome to bring their own snacks and picnics and the train does have a cash bar on board. The second option is slightly more expensive and includes visiting the Berg Kelder (Distell) wine museum, cellars and shop for R410 per adult, which includes a tasting session with five different wines. Booking is essential: email@example.com

Twilight Team Run
Trade in your ties for headbands or your heels for luminous sneakers and dress for success at the annual 5-km Twilight Team Run. Each year, flocks of spirited team runners and company competitors take to the streets of the Mother City to support a worthy cause (the run is held in aid of the Community Chest of the Western Cape, an organisation that aims to empower and support vulnerable communities). Now in its 33rd year, the Twilight Team Run is usually always hosted on the first Tuesday of December. Popular as an exhilarating, energetic alternative to the sometimes-dowdy end of year function, this fun run invites colleagues to dress alike and build team spirit in groups of four to six as they race or ramble to the finish line. Afterwards, corporates are encouraged to rent a hospitality site at the after party and treat their staff to hard-earned entertainment such as an erected company gazebo or gas braai (barbeque).
