A neighbourhood pizza gem for the family

Remember Bruegels Pizzeria? This stylish pizza and wine restaurant is now there instead. Couple Ammy and Arno Steijn opened NOVO in March 2024. For adults there’s pizza and wines from small local brands like Testalonga and Usana, and for the kids there’s pizzettes and colouring tables.

A NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM (IN AN OLD SPOT)

The Steijn’s had the idea to create a place for good pizza and wine that could become a go-to for the southern suburbs. 

Inside the Little Mowbray shop you’ll find green plants, low hanging bulb lights, couch booth seating and wooden tables and chairs. There’s also a bar counter and colouring tables for the kids.

HANDMADE PIZZAS (AND PIZZETTES)

One great perk of visiting a new place? They’re still testing out the menu. Their latest unofficial addition is the El Mariachi pizza (slow roasted pulled pork in BBQ sauce, pickled jalapeños, red onion, sour cream and fresh coriander). 

Other menu items include pork polpettes (Italian meatballs in a tomato sauce) and caponata (chopped and fried eggplant) for an aperitivo, pizzas like the Bianco Ariela (feta, red onion, pistachio, honey and rocket), and for desserts there’s affogatos, tiramisu and chocolate brownies with ice cream. There’s pizzettes (small pizzas) for the kids too.

LOCAL WINES & APERITIFS

A love for wine runs in the family, with Ammy’s brother being the owner of Publik Wine Bar. NOVO is all about highlighting local wines so you’ll find small and curious brands like Testalonga ‘Mielie Green’ Chenin Blanc, Usana ‘The Doctor’ Sauvignon Blanc, Khayelitshas Finest and more. There’s also aperitifs like Negroni, G&T and Margarita.
