Hungry herbivores (and carnivores), head to Lekker Vegan for gourmet junk food
Some claim that the future of fast food is vegan. If that’s true then the future arrived in December, when junk food vegan restaurant Lekker Vegan opened it’s doors on Barrack Street in the trendy up-and-coming East City area.
FROM AMSTERDAM TO CAPE TOWN
The eatery is owned by a Dutch family who ran a vegan restaurant in Amsterdam, where the idea of cruelty-free junk food is popular. They brought the concept to Cape Town because they saw a shift to plant based diets in restaurants.
The thinking behind Lekker Vegan was to showcase, through popular takeout dishes, how tasty vegan food can be. The owners claim that up to 80% of Lekker Vegan’s patrons are non-vegan. What they are also proud of is that they are not just about conscious eating; they also want to leave you satisfied. What might also impress you is that they are open till 3am on weekends. This is the only vegan eatery in the city open at these hours.
WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
The Dutch food kapsalon, which is hot chips smothered in a cheese sauce and other toppings of your choice. It’s a gatsby (also on the menu) minus the bread, and like the gatsby, a kapsalon is also renowned for curing a babbelas. They also serve chip rolls and burgers. The gatsbys and burgers are made from soy and wheat protein, and contain no genetically modified ingredients. Desserts include chocolate cheesecake and coconut-based soft-serve ice cream. There’s a whole lot more choice on the menu.
The Crispy Burger was chosen to start off with (fried vegan patty, slices of avo, slices of tomato, sour cream crisps, fried onions, salad mix of purple cabbage, iceberg lettuce,and carrots with a creamy dressing) which was sublime. I also tried the delicious snacks, like the cheese spring rolls, made from a cheese alternative consisting of potato starch, modified starch, coconut oil and onion. And topped off my meal with the chocolate cheesecake made from avo, coconut oil and organic chocolate.
Tip: Lekker Vegan is open until 3am on a Friday and Saturday.
The Bill: Food items range from R40 to R150
Opening Times: 12pm – 10pm Sunday to Thursday. And 12pm to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
