Rip Out Alien Vegetation and Plant Indigenous Trees in Kommetjie

Get your hands dirty and do your bit for the environment for International Earth Day

It’s International Earth Day on Monday 22 April, and you can celebrate it and do your bit for the good of the earth over the following weekend (27 and 28 April). That weekend, residents of the South Peninsula will gather to plant trees and create environmental awareness – everyone is welcome to join.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL WEEKEND
On Saturday 27 April, join the general clean-up, planting, fixing play park equipment and clearing alien invasive plant species. There will also be a children's march for species protection (with an Earth Day theme) and a bring-and-share breakfast. Meet at the playpark in Weavers End, Kommetjie at 9am.

On Sunday 28 April, they’ll be doing tree and shrub planting, clearing alien invasive plant species and signing a letter to the Brazilian embassy regarding protection for the Amazon rainforest. Meet at the top of Rubbi Road, Kommetjie at 9:30am after mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Church.

They will also be encouraging the City Nature Challenge which aims to get a snapshot of Cape Town's wild and plant life over a few days around the city. You can download the iNaturalist app to participate.

WHERE ARE THEY PLANTING TREES?
Trees will be planted around the Weavers Park area, at St Joseph's Church and at Kommetjie Primary School. There may also be some activity at the Open Door Centre in Ocean View on Sunday.

TREES OF CHOICE
The trees that the team will be planting include indigenous trees such as Milkwoods, Waterbessie (Syzygium cordatum), Wild Camphor (Tarchonanthus camphoratus) and various fynbos shrubs and ground covers.

ATTENDING THE EVENT
If you’d like to help, it’s advisable to bring old clothes, strong shoes, sunblock, some refreshment to share and your favourite outdoor tools. There is no charge to participate, and if you would like to attend, please contact Patrick Dowling at Patrick@tops.org.za or +27(0)84 966 1249.

MAKE A DAY OF IT
There are several spots to grab tea, coffee, drinks and meals in Kommetjie such as The Green Room, Fisherman's, The Lighthouse Pub and Grill and Espresso.Kom.
