Ever wondered what life is like in Mzansis Lokshini (township location)? The Mother City’s very own, Camissa Travel & Marketing offers an opportunity to experience a full-day of cultural enlightenment, with an add-on tour combining of a half-day excursion to the townships of Langa, Gugulethu and Bonteheuwel, and ending off with a ferry trip to the world-famous Robben Island.
Participants are picked up from the Atlantic Seaboard, Waterfront or City Bowl between 08:30 and 09:00. The tour begins with a drive through District Six, the former residential area of over 60, 000 inhabitants who were forcibly removed as a result of the Apartheid regimes Group Areas Act in 1966.
The tour takes patrons on a historical journey from spaces first occupied by people of colour, to spaces they were forced to occupy. Although at first glance it may seem like a sombre time-travelling experience, this tour is anything but. Not only does the township tour focus on the people of the townships, their culture, traditions, norms and day-to-day customs, but Camissa township tours also offer insight into the ways in which South Africans have taken ownership of their lives, while refusing to be victims of circumstance.
Camissa township tours are intimate and interactive, giving visitors the opportunity to engage with the people of these culturally-rich areas. All tours are conducted by “in-the-know” current or ex-township residents, who will be able to answer most (if not all) questions relating to the areas of Langa, Gugulethu and Bonteheuwel.
Finally, visitors end their afternoon off at the place of Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela’s, incarceration: Robben Island.
The Robben Island tour with Camissa includes a return ferry ride, a guided tour of the island, as well as a look inside the prison cell of Nelson Mandela. The afternoon ends off at the Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront.
