Green Point Park is so much more than your neighbourhood playground. It’s got a meditative labyrinth, sundial that uses your shadow, biodiversity gardens with over 300 plant species, and even a sand volleyball court. It’s for picnics, play, exercise or simply wandering through the gardens bursting with fynbos.

The park’s carefully landscaped lawns and gardens are home to over 300 indigenous plant species, including trees, shrubs, flowers and fynbos like wild fig, wild rosemary and coastal camphor bush growing in the Biodiversity Showcase Garden.
Visitors who walk on the looped pathways around the central dam can spot Cape sparrows, Kingfishers and Yellow-billed Ducks, which are common birds in the park. Other local wildlife like frogs, dragonflies and squirrels also thrive here amid the wetlands and flower beds.

There’s also curious art by local artists inside the park. Image: @ceramicszizamele on Instagram
It’s easy to spend an entire day here. Families and friends can spread a blanket on the grassy lawns or settle under shaded seating areas with wooden tables and benches (which fill up pretty quickly on weekends and public holidays). The park is open from 7am to 7pm, giving you plenty of time to picnic and play.
If you don’t feel like packing food, the Park Café (open from 8am to 5pm) is a great alternative. They serve cappuccinos for R35, toasted sandwiches from R65, burgers for R90 and a house salad for R95. They’ve also got a kids menu and sweet treats like soft-serve ice cream and scones with cream and jam.
While you enjoy a coffee or tea in the park, families can let the children run rampant on the playgrounds. The park has three playgrounds spread across the grounds; the tot-lot play park for kids 1 to 6 years old, the adventure play park for children 7 to 16 years old and the outdoor labyrinth. Each has its own climbing frames, slides, swings, and open space for running games.

Please note that no alcohol is permitted in the park. Image: @parkcafect on Instagram
The park also has a few spaces worth exploring. The Khoi huts, found near the Biodiversity Garden, offer a thoughtful nod to the region’s First Nations. These dome-shaped mobile shelters show how Khoi families once lived as they moved with their herds across the land.
Near the central lawns, the park’s analemmatic sundial is both playful and clever: stand on the marker for today’s date, face the sun, raise your arms and your shadow becomes the clock hand. It works year round and is one of the park’s quiet little surprises.
The outdoor labyrinth adds another reflective space. Installed in 2012, its looping pathways create a slow, meditative walk that winds gently toward the centre before leading you back out again.

Another reason why Green Point Park is loved by many is for its free gym equipment. Found near the entrance it’s equipped with stationary bikes, ellipticals, weightlifting machines, pull-up bars, parallel bars for bodyweight exercises and benches for bench pressing.
If you don’t want to use the equipment but still get a workout in, there are cycling lanes for visitors to ride bicycles or run through the park.

The gym is suitable for adults of all ages and fitness levels. Image: @tebogo_pinpin on Instagram
Green Point Park is easy to find and just as easy to access. It sits between the Green Point Urban Park entrance, the Cape Town Stadium precinct and the Metropolitan Golf Course, with multiple entrances along Fritz Sonnenberg Road and Bay Road.
There’s plenty of free parking all around the perimeter. The most convenient spots are along Fritz Sonnenberg Road, next to the stadium, or near the Green Point Lighthouse side if you're entering from Beach Road.
Green Point Park is a space that keeps surprising you, whether you come for play, picnics, or the peace and quiet.

Security personnel patrol the grounds and are stationed at entrances so it’s very safe. Image: @tebogo_pinpin on Instagram
