Sip on wine in a vineyard, have a picnic lunch or even make your own gin
This week(end) is packed with things to do and places to visit. Enjoy Cape Town's summer sun with a picnic lunch, a ride up Table Mountain, a stroll through the vineyards or a visit to the penguins at Two Oceans Aquarium.
Picnic Cafe & Deli at Montebello Design Centre in Newlands has a novel concept: when you order your food from the deli counter, it’ll come neatly packed in a picnic basket. You can choose to have it at one of the tables under the trees (some with couches, others with chairs) or you can take a blanket and find a more secluded spot around the centre. There is also a play area for kids and games for the older crowd to play at the Picnic Cafe & Deli.

Take in the Western Cape’s spectacular scenery with a Cape Point Vineyards walk. The vineyards are open to the public every Saturday and Sunday, plus you can bring a picnic blanket and stock up on snacks from the wine shop inside. You can also buy a bottle of wine to have with your picnic or have lunch in the Cape Point Vineyards Restaurant after your vineyard walk.

Gabrielle Goliath is a multimedia artist and gender activist who won the 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Arts. Her powerful exhibition This song is for… is showing at the Iziko South African National Gallery, and is made up of a unique collection of dedication songs, each one chosen by a survivor of rape. They also chose a colour and wrote a reflection to accompany it. There are strict Covid-19 policies to ensure your safety when you visit the Iziko Museums.

Take the weekend to browse legendary South African artist Sam Nhlengethwa's colourful figurative and collage works. He’s sharing an intimate look into his love for his family and jazz from his personal vinyl collection. Break up your date with Nhlengethwa's The Still from Life exhibition with a coffee and toastie at the café when you visit the Rupert Museum.

Gin lovers listen up! Try your hand at crafting the perfect gin. Distillers & Union offer a gin-making course where you can personalise everything from your favourite fragrant botanical spices to the alcohol level and even the logo. The co-founders Simon Von Witt and Warren Harries-Jones have some award-winning vodkas, rums and a spicy, fiery ginger beer range ready for you to sample at Distillers & Union.

The SA Jewish Museum currently has an exhibition entitled Ground Breakers: A History of Progressive Judaism in South Africa. It delves into how the Jewish community in South Africa contributed to advancing women's role, building bridges to other faiths and taking outreach projects into African townships. After the exhibition, kick back and relax at the museum’s cafe, or see the other fascinating permanent exhibits at the SA Jewish Museum.

Take a trip to Two Oceans Aquarium for everyone's favourite: penguins. It's hard to resist visiting these adorable seabirds in tuxedos. This is just one of the species visitors can see, they have so many fascinating exhibitions to marvel at. Take the kids to see some of the 8 000 wonderful sea creatures at South Africa's most famous aquarium, like jellyfish and other amazing invertebrates (some of which don't have a brain or heart) at Two Oceans Aquarium.
