You’ve heard of Hungry Lion, but do you know about Happy Hippo? This on-the-go breakfast joint opened in July 2022 in the heart of the inner city. It’s the ideal spot to grab a quick snack on your way to work – it’s got pastries, muffins, breakfast bowls, sandwiches, bagels, pies – you name it. And it’s affordable, too. It’s decorated with green walls and plants, giving you that serene feeling you need to kick-start your day.
Must-try: For a quick snack, the apricot-jam donut hits the spot. If you’re looking for something more filling, the salmon cream cheese bagel or the smoked chicken salad with hummus dressing.

GO ON A JOURNEY UNDER CHERRY BLOSSOMS
Pink cherry blossoms cascade down the roof of this pink-lit restaurant. Ukiyo, pronounced “u-key-yo” is the Japanese principle of the fleeting world – that it’s all about the journey, not the destination. This newly opened Japanese restaurant believes that eating good food with people you care about is one of life’s great pleasures and experiences. And with a menu of hibachi grilled lamb, tempura langoustines and octopus carpaccio, you’re in for an experience.

VISIT A VEGAN WAFFLE HOUSE
A new waffle house is the latest addition to Ditto ice cream parlour. These oat waffles come in 5 banging flavours. Try the Better Than Biscoff (2 scoops Biscoff ice-cream, biscoff crumble, biscoff spread, caramel sauce, and brûléed banana) or Peanut Butter Bomb (1 scoop Pick Me Up Buttercup, 1 scoop Brittle Gone Nuts, peanut butter, chocolate sauce, and peanut butter cup). PARTY AT PENTHOUSE
The once popular Entourage, above Nu Bar in Stellenbosch, is now a hot pink nightclub. Walk up neon-pink lit steps and enter a vibey club and bar. There’s a dance floor, live DJ, large bar area and plenty of raised seating to take a break in between dancing. Plus, you can party throughout the week (open between Monday to Saturday) with live DJ’s every night.

ROADTRIP TO MCGREGOR
The flagship restaurant at Temeno Retreat in McGregor has reopened and is bringing a fresh take on contemporary country cuisine. Tebaldi’s is now under the leadership of Chef Christiaan Campbell (known for his work at Delaire Graff and Boschendal). The restaurant overlooks a stunning garden on its enclosed patio area and also has an elegant yet cosy dining room.
Must-try: The hot smoked salmon stirred into a potato ‘risotto’ with a dash of confit lemon, fermented cream and grilled leeks

BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO DINE AT DUSK
Revolutionary, immersive, unique - that’s what a new, fine-dining restaurant in Stellenbosch promises. There's a 13-course tasting menu and wholesome concepts around ingredients – like using limpets and mature chicken – and collaborations with small, local suppliers. Dusk aims to push boundaries, and you'll be able to judge for yourself when it opens on 1 September 2022.
Must-try: Laying hen ballotine with foraged mushroom garum and roasted local roots.

VISIT A STEAKHOUSE IN NEWLANDS
Comfort meets eloquence at this new meat eatery in Newlands. Picanha Steakhouse is rustic and moody, with concrete walls, hunting trophies and hanging plants. It has a variety of steak options, as well as some smokey appetisers like a Beef Fillet Carpaccio. Pair it all with a glass of wine (it has loads to select from). Plus there’s free parking across the street.
Must-try: You can’t go wrong with any of the steak options. For those not in a steaky mood, try the Ragu Beef Gnocchi (slow-cooked beef with butternut gnocchi) or the Deluxe Burger.

EAT A FARM-STYLE BREAKFAST OR LUNCH + MEET GOATS
Goatshed Restaurant at Fairview Wine Farm in Paarl reopened its doors in early July 2022. The space is modern, yet quirky and has comical portraits of the farm’s goats throughout the restaurant. It has a cosy fireplace indoors and a veranda covered in vines with a view of the goat tower.

WINE AND DINE AT THIS BAR IN STELLIES
This spot was once the popular Wijnhuis in Stellenbosch, but is now a “no fuss no muss” wine bar. The veranda stretches around the bar and spills out into the streets, giving it that European feel. Taste a wide variety of wines (including Guardians Peak, Rust and Vrede and more) and share a plate of Mediterranean-style tapas.
Must-try: For vegetarians – The herb arancini served with a lemon crème fraiche paired with the Stellenbosch Reserve Chardonnay. For meat eaters – The salt and pepper squid paired with the Stellenbosch Reserve Chenin Blanc.

LOOK WHO’S TAKEN OVER MZOLI’S IN GUGULETHU
Nothing will ever replace Mzoli’s (butchery and shisanyama in Gugulethu), but there’s a new spot that’s opened right where Mzoli’s used to be. Teez @ 115 is a stylish lounge and butchery with plush green and blue couches and fairy lights hanging from the ceiling. You can eat breakfast and lunch or shop at the butchery.

UNWIND AT A LAID-BACK BAR IN SEA POINT
Don’t worry about dressing up for a night out in Sea Point. This laid back space, which opened in June 2022, is so cosy it will feel like home (with comfortable couches and heaters, perfect for winter). You can order simple foods and get wine by the glass, plus there’s live jazz on Sundays at Only Fools.

GO MEATLESS AT A FAST-FOOD JOINT
This new fast-food vegan joint on Loop Street will leave you saying “WTF it’s a plant?” Covered in greenery and wooden panels from floor to roof for a cosy feel, WTF Plant welcomes everyone (even the carnivores). From burgers, boerie rolls and tacos to kinky corn ribs and ice cream sundaes, the menu will impress even the fussiest meat-lovers.

Who said fast food can’t be healthy? OAKBERRY Açaí Bowls (originating from Brazil) has opened a colourful hub in Sea Point, serving a nutritious experience at a fast pace. TRY CANDY FROM AROUND THE WORLD

SAVOUR ETHIOPIAN FOOD AT THIS REOPENED GEM
After closing its doors in August 2020, Addis Restaurant is back with a bang. It reopened on 20 June 2022 and brings an Ethiopian dining experience to the heart of Cape Town. The menu caters for almost every taste bud (50% of the menu is vegan), plus there’s gluten-free options, and it’s halaal friendly. Try everything from Doro Tibs (chicken fillet cut into strips, stir-fried with cardamom) to Pumpkin Wot (pumpkin cubes sauteed with garlic and onions, prepared with a fiery Ethiopian spice blend).
Must-try: The combo for two - you can combine any four dishes from the main menu.

TASTE CYPRIOT-GREEK FOODS IN CITY CENTRE
The newest addition to the inner city’s foodie scene comes with punchy flavours and vacay vibes. Ouzeri in Wale Street specialises in traditional Cyprus and Greece foods, whie mimicking the look and feel of a traditional tavern with sleek white walls, arches and marble pedestals.

HANG OUT AT THIS ALL-DAY CAFE BAR
Origin Coffee by day – Cafe Noir by night. This new gem in De Waterkant was inspired by the all-day cafes in France and Italy. It first opened in March 2022 and has since become a popular evening hangout spot (serving some stunning cocktails, craft beers, wines and of course, coffee). You can also snack on their small-plate menu at Café Noir.

FEAST ON LOCAL ABALONE WITH A SEA VIEW
Perlemoen is a new, first-of-a-kind restaurant, set in a museum in the Old Harbour. It’s the only eatery in South Africa that focuses on abalone, which is harvested fresh (and legally) from a local farm. DRINK BUBBLE TEA AT THIS PLAYFUL SPOT
Susu Bubble Tea opened its doors at the end of April 2022, in De Waterkant. The interior is bright, playful, and full of colour, any Instagrammer’s dream. ORDER A BUTTERY BREKKIE IN THE CITY
Everything’s made with butter at this all-day breakfast and bistro bar that opened its doors in the heart of the Mother City mid-2021. For under R50 each, you can get a slice of homemade sourdough with an abundance of butter, or a thick slice of nutty banana bread, a scone with berry jam, two buttered mielies, buttered popcorn, or The Old Boy (a soft-boiled egg with dippy sourdough soldiers). Plus, you can escape the office for the day, there's free wifi for customers at Butter.
