Wakaberry Frozen Yoghurt Bars in Cape Town

South Africa’s favourite self-service, soft-serve stores open in the Mother City

As of mid-November 2012, Capetonians can look forward to delighting in the same deliciously fresh frozen yoghurt that their counterparts from other South African cities have enjoyed since the first Wakaberry soft-serve bar was founded back in May 2011.

Joining their six sister stores already established in Durban, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch, two new additions to the popular nationwide brand are set to open in the Mother City, one on 16 November 2012 in the city centre on Kloof Street and one on 23 November 2012 in the Southern Suburbs on Rondebosch’s Dean Street.

As the first frozen yoghurt bar in the country to introduce the interactive ‘self-service’ concept, Wakaberry – a proudly Mzansi name inspired by the general fervour surrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem ‘Waka Waka’ – invites customers to create their own unique frozen dessert combinations by helping themselves to the various flavours and toppings on offer. Pricing then works on a pay-by-weight system, leaving patrons free to pile on as much or as little as desired.

This social, interactive focus is far from the stores’ only defining feature, though. Like at the Wakaberry outlets in other cities (and unlike most other local FroYo bars), the new Cape Town-based enterprises will make use of only entirely natural, 98%-fat-free, Halaal-certified yoghurt sourced fresh from surrounding organic farms, hence offering  a far healthier (but just as delectable) alternative to standard sweet treats. What’s more, they’re billed to serve the same incredibly diverse range of unique flavours and tantalising toppings that the brand is already well known and loved for.

“We have a huge selection on offer,” says Wakaberry Marketing Manager Luise Peters proudly. “Everytime you come in, you can expect to experience something different.”

The Mother City stores will rotate weekly through over 40 different fresh flavours (8 to 10 of which will be available on any given day),from more standard options, like Strawberry, Vanilla, Caramel, Peach and English Toffee, to more decadent, premium alternatives, like Red Velvet Cake, Cookie Dough, Pumpkin Pie and Rainforest Pomegranate. Not to mention, more than 48 distinct toppings (think fresh fruit, assorted nuts, jelly tots, chocolate sprinkles and marshmallows) will be available at a time.

In essence, in every way, the delightful new FroYo parlours promise an experience that’s as indulgent and delicious as it is memorable and fun, one that’s sure to inject happiness into any individual’s day – a key objective of the charming Wakaberry brand.

Tip: Looking for a fresh, fun way to celebrate your little one’s special day? Wakaberry hosts children’s birthday parties for kids under the age of 14, so be sure to contact the respective Cape Town stores for more information about pricing and packages.

Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday: 9am – late (exact closing times are still to be confirmed)

The Bill: With Wakaberry’s innovative pay-per-weight system, customers can control the cost of their frozen yoghurt purchases; across all flavours and topping the unit price is R11 for every 100g.
