The aftermath of the #capestorm

Check out the latest updates and footage from Cape Town's storm

Last Update 9 June 2017

With warnings to stay indoors you might have missed some of the shocking footage from Wednesday, 8 June 2017. The #capestorm has hit the Western Cape with devastation and floods. Many were able to capture images and videos of the aftermath which were shared across social media channels.

With the storm came widespread gales (wind speeds over 90 km/h) which tore through the Western Cape coast. Swells were seen to pound the Atlantic coastline of the country, having reached 12 to 15m in height. The swells were especially powerful, lasting for a period of 15 to 17 seconds.

With the cold front and the storm, many homeless and displaced individuals require shelter. You can aid them by donating funds to Haven.org.za. Donating enables those in need of shelter with a bed for the cold winter nights. We will be updating information on where to donate funds and items as the storm continues and passes.

The City of Cape Town has closed off Big Bay Beach until further notice after a dune collapse as a result of the #capestorm. A City official was injured when the dune collapsed beneath him, and it was then decided that the entire beach would be closed off until the dune is stable and safe.

’’Big Bay Beach has suffered extensive damage and erosion as a result of the stormy weather that Cape Town has experienced over the past 48 hours. The area is unstable and unsafe.” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area North, Councillor Suzette Little.

Have a look at the effects of the #capestorm in Cape Town below:
