Rhythm Records Releases Bellville Rock City CD and DVD
Bellville Rock City is a unique documentary film project that takes a deeper look at Bellville's most iconic Afrikaans rock bands
Rhythm Records has released a special South African music and documentary package on CD and DVD, which includes songs and video footage (including a DVD documentary - 12 Mile Stone) of some of the most iconic Bellville bands, such as Fokofpolisiekar, the Springbok Nude Girls, Foto na Dans, aKING, Jax Panik, K.O.B.U.S!, Van Coke Kartel, New Holland, Ashtray Electric, Thieve, Lukraaketaar, Tatum and Die Heuwels Fantasties.
The package, named Bellville Rock City, was officially launched at an event in early December 2008, which CapeTownMagazine.com was privileged to attend.
We were impressed with the realness and rawness of the 12 Mile Stone documentary, particularly the way it unpacks a number of fascinating insights that all work together to communicate the deeper meaning and culture of rock music from Bellville.
It's a must-see for anyone even vaguely interested in where Afrikaans rock has come from, where it is now, and where it's heading in the future. This is the kind of production that acts as a window for foreigners - and South Africans - to look into the soul of Afrikaans rock music.
All of a sudden there's an exciting new anchor point not only for Bellville bands but also for Afrikaans rock music as a genre.
This is your chance to own a piece of history in the making. The complete package is so much more significant than a few mp3s downloaded from the net. For those that copy instead of buy SA music, let this package be your redemption!
The Bellville Rock City package is going to redefine the perception of Bellville. If Bellville is the Rock City, then the rockers featured in this package are certainly the night mayors.
The Bellville Rock City package includes:
- A 13-track audio CD featuring 13 of Bellville’s most prominent Rock groups/artists
- A 30-minute documentary short film (12 Mile Stone) about the Bellville rock scene
- 8 MP3s from the archives of Bellville bands throughout the years
- 10 music videos
- A 48-page booklet in which the musicians share their photos and experiences
Fokofpolisiekar, the Springbok Nude Girls, Foto na Dans, aKING, Jax Panik, K.O.B.U.S!, Van Coke Kartel, New Holland, Ashtray Electric, Thieve, Lukraaketaar, Tatum and Die Heuwels Fantasties are all from Bellville and all feature in the package.
Most of them have known each other for a couple of years and their friendships, personal bonds and shared musical interests are captured in the documentary.
The 12 Mile Stone documentary explores the history and current scene to show why Bellville is currently featuring so prominently in the South African rock scene.
