CapeTownMag celebrates 25 000 Twitter followers with a twist

After 25 fun-filled hours, the #balloonguys announce the prize winners

They were accused of being filled with hot air, of cultivating an idea that would never float of blowing smoke into the Twitterverse; but, after executing a 25-hour,fun-filled, gruelling social media campaign, the #balloonguys proved that with a little bit of determination (to do something for their followers) and an incredible amount of positive support from some of Cape Town’s key thought leaders, it’s possible to achieve even the loftiest of goals.

How It Started

It all started when the #balloonguys promised to blow up a balloon for each new person who followed @CapeTownMag in a lead-up to the 25,000 follower mark.

“Let’s do something to celebrate the lead up to our 25,000th Twitter follower,” said the one.

“Why don’t we promise to inflate balloons for 25 hours in honour of each new follower,” said the other. “We can also give away super cool prizes to anyone that gives us a shout-out on the day.”

The two gave each other a high five, blind to the fact that their plan could very well “blow-up” in their faces.

So it happened, the comment-turned-promise culminated when a wild assortment of Cape Town organisations partnered-up. Radisson Blu Waterfront Cape Town jumped on board, DHL Western Province Rugby called, we ran into Siv Ngesi, The Baxter Theatre and Rafikis walked in, and done; a campaign was born in hours. It was all about fun; it wasn’t about numbers.

The Prizes

  • 25 hours at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Cape Town
  • 10 tickets to a Western Province rugby game
  • 25 of Freshlyground’s soon-to-be-released new albums
  • 25 pizzas at Rafikis Bar
  • 25 tickets to ‘Race Card’ at the Baxter Theatre
  • 25 tickets to the Baxter Theatre’s Dance Festival

The Winners

The response to the campaign was simply incredible and unbelievably humbling. CapeTownMag would like to thank everyone who offered their unfaltering support, including the countless followers who tuned-in and gave shout-outs throughout and the industry professionals who gave their best punts and promotional pushes.
