More to do at Webersburg Wine Estate than you ever imagined

Yes, there’s wine, but also art, yoga, cooking classes & kudu macarons

You expect wine at a Stellenbosch estate, right? What if you could also get fresh juice pairings and geese feeding free of charge for your kids, picnic pods by a dam, painting classes with a vineyard view, a five-star boutique hotel with original yellow wood floors and Cape Dutch rafters… Webersburg surprises at every turn, a 230-year-old wine farm that feels novel at each visit.

1. KUDU MACARON WINE PAIRING

Webersburg’s storied cellar building is home to two tastings. The vinoteque pairing, which includes the cap classique, sauvignon blanc, and rosé, may surprise you: The wines are paired with a basil pesto and cream cheese macaron, cucumber crostini, and a kudu carpaccio macaron.

2. UNDERGROUND RED WINE TASTINGS

The second tasting, which happens in the underground barrel room, details the wine-making process and the farm’s 230-year wine-making history, with red wine (like the Bastiaan Blend and a cabernet sauvignon) and charcuterie pairings. 3. CASUAL DAM-SIDE DINING

After a tasting or two, most wander to the restaurant, which serves a refined yet humble menu with pork belly, line fish, burgers and wood-fired pizza. Both the casual indoor space and the alfresco area under the trees overlook the mountains, the scenic dam and the resident geese.

4. PICNICS UNDER OAK TREES

The picnic area shares the same view, with picnic “pods” set up by the dam under the sprawling oak trees or in front of the elegant Cape Dutch Manor House. Each “pod” includes blankets, cushions and a basket.

There are three harvest baskets (with options like wraps, charcuterie and fresh fruit, or pizza), as well as a gourmet basket of cheeses, bread, quiche, cold meats, milk tart macarons, and more. The harvest baskets start from R165pp and the gourmet basket is R850 for two.

5. PLAY AREAS WITH GEESE & DUCKS

Also by the picnic area is a jungle gym, open lawns and tables. Kids love the tame geese, ducks, chickens, and turkeys, which are quite friendly.

6. KIDS GET FREE PAIRINGS

Another thing that parents appreciate is that with each wine tasting, kids get a free pairing with fresh apple, pomegranate, and grape juices, sweets and biscuits.

There are also pizza and cookie-making sessions, and R100 fun boxes with colouring activities, sweets, and a small gift. It’s an easy way to keep kids entertained while you settle in for a long, lazy picnic.

7. FEED THE GEESE

While picnicking, ask the staff at the restaurant or reception for some goose feed, and they’ll provide it free of charge. Make sure to visit in the mornings and early afternoons, as this is when you’ll see them waddling along the lawns. For the rest of the day they usually swim in the dam.

8. BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN AN 18TH-CENTURY MANOR

While Webersburg may draw families for weekend visits, many guests also choose to stay and explore Stellenbosch with Webersburg as homebase. The service at the five-star Manor House is impeccable, with a bottle of cap classique on ice upon arrival, a turndown service with chocolates and strawberries, and even a handwritten note with the weather for the following day.

Each of the five rooms in the boutique hotel, which was renovated from a 1786 manor house, has antique furniture, original yellow wood floors, and rafters in a Cape Dutch style. You can book the entire house for 10 people, or book one room and share the communal lounges.

9. STABLES-TURNED-COTTAGE WITH A POOL

The Oak Cottage, originally a horse stable, is a more private alternative popular with families. The luxury three-bedroom has high ceilings, a kitchen and dining area, and a braai area with a patio.

Rounding off the accommodation is the Jonkershuis, made up of one and two-bedroom units, and the Vineyard Cottages, which sit in the vineyards with dam and mountain views.

All overnight guests get access to the beautiful pool outside of the Manor House, where they’re served cocktails and snacks.

10. PRIVATE CHEF’S TABLE IN THE 1796 CELLAR

The Private Chef’s Tables are another spectacular experience. Hosted in the barrel room of the underground cellar that dates back to 1796, the chef presents and explains each dish of the set menu. Because of the intimate nature of this fine dining experience, it’s best suited for groups of six to 12.

11. SUNSET VINEYARD TASTINGS

Another alternative to the traditional wine tasting is the Sunset Vineyard Experience, done with the farm manager. It includes a tour and wine pairing, with five wines and a harvest table, right in the vineyards. You can snack on charcuterie and watch the sun slip behind the vines.

12. PLANT A TREE ON THE ESTATE

Included in the cost of your wine tasting is the opportunity to plant a tree. It is tagged with your name and any fruit that grows on it is gifted to communities in the area.

13. SCULPTURE & ART STUDIO TOURS

Regardless of what you choose to do, you’ll see wildlife sculptures scattered across the estate. Artists include Vincent Da Silva, a Somerset West-based artist globally renowned for his bronzes, and Heidi Hadaway, known for her hyperrealistic busts and figures, among others.

An art tour is available, which includes a wine pairing and ends with a visit to Vincent Da Silva’s studio in Stellenbosch.

14. ART WORKSHOP WITH A TASTING

If you prefer to create rather than admire, there are even painting workshops for groups of 5 to 10 people. An instructor guides you step-by-step through the process of creating a picture, paired with Webersburg wines.

15. YOGA, PILATES & TENNIS

While it may be boutique and family-run, the number of things to do at Webersburg rivals that of many large estates. The tennis court is free for overnight guests with a small fee for day visitors (balls and rackets are available to rent). It can even be arranged for smoothies and snacks to be served on the tennis court.

Yoga and pilates classes are available on the lawns or in the vineyards with a personal instructor. This can be followed by breakfast in the vineyard afterwards.

16. COOKING CLASSES & TEAM-BUILDING COOK-OFFS

For a different kind of date night, Webersburg offers cooking classes where you can learn to make gnocchi, bread with flavoured butters, and various South African dishes.

There’s also a team-building potjiekos cook-off, where teams compete against each other to make the best potjiekos while learning tips and techniques from the chef. It can accommodate anywhere from 20 to 100 people in groups of 10.

17. BRAINSTORM OR CELEBRATE BY THE DAM

For team-building activities and workshops, Webersburg has its own conference venue that can host up to 200 people. Events also happen in various spaces; the above-ground section of the cellar can be used for baby showers, bachelorettes, and birthday parties for up to 80 people.

The lawns and al fresco area, which overlook the dam, host gatherings of up to 60. Small conferences can also be accommodated in the Manor House, which features a large table that seats 12.

18. ONE OF THE BEST STELLENBOSCH WEDDING VENUES

Webersburg is one of Stellenbosch’s most popular wedding venues, with a beautiful outdoor area with views of the lake that make for an idyllic wedding ceremony.

The conference venue’s simple interiors can easily be decked out to match the decor of almost any wedding theme. It is equipped with all the facilities you would need for a wedding and the catering, and it offers views of the lake.
