Chapman’s Peak is open!

Chapman's Peak Drive is open once again!

Last Update: 18 July 2017

UPDATE: Chapman’s Peak Drive is once again open to the public. The road has been cleared and deemed safe for use. We don’t have the whole story right now, but we are working on it as you read this! The road was supposed to be closed indefinitely after the Cape Storm made a bit of a mess, but due to clean-up efforts the road is now clear and accessible from both Hout Bay and Noordhoek. Your morning commute just got a whole lot easier!

Check out all the fun things you can do in Hout Bay, and on the other side, check out the Noordhoek Farm Village!

It seems that the #capestorm has opened the door to more natural phenomenons in the Western Cape. The most recent incident took place 19 June 2017, closing Chapman’s Peak drive.. Rough weather conditions resulted in a hazardous rockfall making it too dangerous to drive on the normally serene route.

According to officials approximately 15m3 of rocks fell onto the coastal road, causing enormous damage, and making it significantly dangerous to drive on. The incident happened on the Noordhoek end, where two of the catch fences were damaged by the amount of rocks falling.

The Department of Transport and Public Works has said that the route will be closed for a minimum of three to four weeks. In the meanwhile, we suggest commuters make Google Maps their best friend (if it isn’t already). Alternative routes for anyone travelling from the Noordhoek area into the city centre would be to take the M64 to get onto the M3. You can also take the M64 get onto the M42 to get onto the M5 going into the city.

We would love to know the little shortcuts you all use. Let us know so we can inform all  traffic-savvy travellers where the quickest routes are. Pop us a message on Facebook or use  #CapeTownMag with your preferred route to keep us updated!
