Line-Up for Cape Town's International Jazz Festival 2009

The 10th Annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival is set to rock the Mother City for two nights!


South African guitarist
Jonathan Butler and US saxophonist Dave Koz are both renowned for the sweet and smooth jazz sounds and their collaboration will prove to be the highlight of this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Mos Def (US) has emerged as the real mover in the 1990’s underground hip-hop revolution. A star in whatever he does, Mos Def has collected two Grammy nominations for his “Sex, Love and Money” single and his 2007 True Magic album.

Cape Town-based vocalist Emily Bruce is taking the local jazz scene by storm, her debut album This Love We Share was well-received.

Abigail Kubeka (RSA) has shared the stage with greats such as Sarah Vaughn and Eartha Kitt. After joining an all-female vocal group led by Miriam Makeba in 1957, Kubeka has remained one of the most revered vocalists in South Africa.

Napalma (Brazil) was established with an expressed aim to create a fever where everyone wants to get onto the dancefloor.

Based now in South Africa, Napalma is made up of Ivo Maia on vocals; Rafael Jabah on electronic programming and percussion; and Cid Travaglia on djembe and electronic percussion.

Dutch pianist Mike del Ferro’s musical encounters with South African saxophonist Shannon Mowday can only be described as magical. This time around Khumalo, del Ferro and Mowday will be accompanied by another gifted and highly skilled duo in the form of Shaun Johannes on bass and Kevin Gibson on drums.

Artist that are showcasing their talent are: 340ml, Abigail Kubeka, AL Foster Quartet, Arturo Lledo, Dave Liebman Quartet, Dianne Reeves, Dr Malomba Philip Tabana, Emily Bruce, Freshly Ground, Goldfish, Hugh Masekela, Incognito, Jonathan Butler & Dave Koz, Jonathan Rubain, Kyle Eastwood, Kyle Shepherd fineART Quartet, Loading Zone, Maceo Parker, Magic Malik, Maurice Gawronsky Quartet, McCoy Mraubata & Special Friends, Mos Def, Napalma and Ndumiso.

Not forgetting the likes of: New York Voices, Opera meets Jazz “Mike del Ferro, Sibongile Khumalo & Shannon Mowday”, Pete Philly & Perquisite Live Band, Peter White, Prisoners of strange, Ringo Madlingozi, Rus Nerwich & the Collective Imagination, Shakatak, Siphokazi, South Paw, Stewart Sekuma, Sylistics, The Robert Glasper Experiment, Zaki Ibraham and Zap Mama.
