Let’s Unite Hout Bay - Because We Can!

Do your bit for the devastated victims of the Hout Bay fires

On Saturday, 8 April 2017, you’ll have the opportunity to help raise funds for the victims of the deadly fire that claimed the lives of nine people when it ripped through Mandela Park, an informal settlement in Hout Bay. The African Cypher will be screened at Kronendal Primary School and all of the proceeds from this event will go to those that need it most.

After the recent fire that devastated Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay last month, the humanitarian response has been truly humbling. The residents of Cape Town have rallied around those affected by the fires, most of which have been left totally destitute after the inferno took their everything on that fateful night. In an attempt to involve the wider public, Pop-Up Cinema have devised a weekend event that’s friendly for the whole family and will hopefully see plenty of people attending and doing their bit.

The African Cypher follows the lives of two dancers from some of South Africa’s poorest areas and their dedication to dance. We explore the general community, the struggles, the effects, the options available and most interestingly, we get to know more about life in an area most know so few about. The African Cypher was directed by Bryan Little, a Hout Bay resident! This lekker local production is just the right film for this event, and we cannot wait to watch it under the stars! Have a look at the trailer below:

This event will see much more than just an outdoor film screening, it will also boast food stalls, kids activities, live music, pop-up market stalls and even a mobile art gallery. Your kids will be kept fully entertained with face painting, jumping castles, drumming circles and hoola hooping. For the adults, there will be gourmet food stalls (which of course the kids can enjoy too), drinks (alcoholic and otherwise), local goods and artworks will be on display and the community atmosphere will be unlike anything you have experienced before.
