Stargazing tour, racing simulators, vineyard lunches + more
The 2011 Volvo Ocean Race touches down in the Mother city this November until December. The lead boat is expected to arrive in Cape Town around the 25th November. How convenient? Right at the start of Cape Town’s silly summer season. But you can bet your bottom dollar that the athletes at the centre of the spectacle have not experienced anything remotely close to a holiday over the past few months.
The Volvo Race is known as the Everest of sailing it involves the best sailors from around the world, the most hi-Tec technology, massive sleep deprivation, physical exhaustion and of course the wrath of mother nature.
Luckily for us land lovers, there’s some partying to be had from these athletic exploits. So while the sailors tackle a nine month stint with which to cover 39 000 nautical miles of the most treacherous sea the V & A Waterfront gets a concert!
The opening concert: on the amphitheatre will take place on Sunday 27 November. Lineup includes: Limited Edition Drum Corps, Claire Philips, The Rescu and Prime Circle.
The Cinema Dome: A cinematic experience inside a large air conditioned container building, which will show the behind the scenes of living on board a Volvo Open 70.
The Ride (simulator): A three minute ride that gives the feeling of being onboard a Volvo Open 70 yacht at speed whilest being bombarded by strong winds and spray.
The Grinder Challenge: Allows you to compete against a friend or the clock in the simulation of an onboard grinding manouvre
Keep the Oceans Clean: An environmental exhibition inside and outside of a 13m diameter inflatable dome.
Skeleton Sea: A group of three surfers and artists create distinctive and thought provoking artwork constructed from rubbish collected from beaches.
Puma Social Club: Friday the 9th December sees the party people reveling at the Puma Social Club ‘All Hands On Deck’ party.
