If you can’t help falling in love with the reggae jams of famed British outfit UB40, you’ll be excited to hear that three of the band’s founding members, including original lead vocalist Ali Campbell, will be performing their beloved hits live and loud at Val de Vie Estate in Paarl on Friday, 4 April 2014.
Though the announcement of the ensemble’s South African tour has been tainted with news of fighting between former and current band members over the rights to use the group’s name, local fans can still expect to boogie to timeless tunes like ‘Red, Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love with You’. The current troupe coming to Mzansi includes Terence ‘Astro’ Wilson on the trumpet, keyboardist Mickey Virtue and singer Ali Campbell, whose distinct voice has wowed and wooed audiences all over the world.
The Birmingham-bred, ska-influenced band first burst onto the international music scene in 1983 with the track ‘Red, Red Wine’ and has since gone on to become one of the most commercially successful reggae acts of all time. This first global hit was actually a cover of a Neil Diamond song, and in fact, a good few of the group’s most popular singles were cover versions, including their most successful hit ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love with You’ and an adaptation of Sonny and Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe’ featuring Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders.
It’s these sort of songs that lucky local fans will be treated to at the Cape Town concert, along with three decades’ worth of other groovy, get-down tunes. No doubt, UB40 will put on an electrifying live performance in what promises to be a perfect evening of great music in pretty old Paarl.
