This year's Heritage Day (24 September) events and happenings are as varied and colourful as our nation’s cultures and languages. There’s everything, everywhere in the city: A historical walk in Simon’s Town to mark an political event, an African cultural gathering in Gugulethu, music festivals all over town, a luncheon at a wine farm and a bring and braai.
THINGS TO DO FOR HERITAGE DAY 2017 IN CAPE TOWN
AFROFEST (22 – 23 SEP)
This two-day free festival is an immersion in African art, music, crafts and cuisine; as well as a showcase for local businesses, such as restaurants, fashion stores and hair salons. The day will feature live cultural bands and DJs, dancers performing capoeira and kizomba, and stalls filled with cool souvenirs. There’ll also be a fashion show, stand-up comedy and poetry performances.

EMBRACING AFRICAN CULTURES (24 SEP)
Come to Gugulethu’s Luyolo Community Hall to gather with other Africans from in and outside South Africa. The aim of this event is to help end xenophobia. It will be a five-hour fiesta of live music, traditional Xhosa dancing and spoken word poetry. Come dressed in your best African regalia or buy some outfits there, where designers will have their wares on display. A sit-down lunch of delicious Xhosa food – pap, meat stews, samp dishes, and umqombothi – will be served.

HERITAGE DAY BRING AND BRAAI (24 SEP)
It’s the classic bring and braai, only it’s hosted at a beautiful wine farm, the Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. You can bring your own meat (though they will be selling meat there as well), but you’ll need to buy sides, salads, desserts and drinks at the venue. The ticket includes a braai spot as well as seating, wood and charcoal, and cutlery and crockery.

BRAAI DAY LUNCH AT EIGHT RESTAURANT (24 SEP)
Eight at Spier Wine Farm is celebrating our nation’s heritage with a spin on South African traditional dishes. The lunch dishes will be influenced by seasonal foods, with freshly-picked herbs and veggies from Eight’s garden. Meats from Spier’s own pastures will be thrown on the braai, and the lunch will include Spier Signature wines and Hoghouse brew draughts. Weather permitting, the meal will be hosted outside on the scenic lawns. Families share a table as they choose their favourite dishes from the restaurant’s buffet-style harvest table.

REMEMBERING WITH SIMON’S TOWN MUSEUM (24 SEP)
The Simon’s Town Museum is hosting an event to remember the 50th anniversary of a particular painful happening in our history: the forced removals of people of colour from Simon’s Town, Glencairn and Noordhoek. Called Shared Memories and Forgotten People, it’s a gathering of the victims of the removals, but is open to anybody interested in our history. It’s a guided walk around Simon’s Town beginning in Jubilee Square. The walk will be accompanied by the music of a church brigade. Afterwards there’ll be a gathering at the Navy sports field for prayers and singing and sharing of stories by the victims. Food stalls at Jubilee Square will sell some favourite Cape dishes such as rotis, curries, samosas and koeksisters.

WILLOWBRIDGE HERITAGE DAY MARKET (24 SEP)
Another spot to pick if you are spending your day with the whole family is at the market at the Willowbridge Shopping Centre in Tyger Valley. You’ll find classic South African dishes such as Cape Malay curries, bunny chows and boerewors rolls, live music and fresh local produce. There’s also an outdoor kiddie area for the kids.

TASTE SUNSHINE WITH WINE.CO.ZA (24 SEP)
The event presented by Wine.co.za at The Shed in Stellenbosch is a dual celebration – of wine.co.za’s 21st birthday as well as Heritage Day. There will be a braai and tastings of local wines from The Chenin Blanc and Pinotage Associations. Along with this, there will be live entertainment from the Sisonke Social Circus, a live choir and music. It’s a day sure to be enjoyed by the whole family.

HERITAGE DAY PARTY AT UKHAMBA BEERWORX (24 SEP)
If you’re looking for a great party, there’s the one hosted by Ukhamba Beerworx at the Palms Décor and Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock. There will be live local DJs and SAMA-award-winning band Native Young, who’ll be playing their unique genre of “African-psychedelic-pop”, which pays homage to traditional SA music styles.
COST: Online tickets cost R100/p and are available from Quicket.co.za until Saturday, 23 September. Please note that there is a fee of R5 for Quicket, so the cost comes to R105/p. ROCK YOUR MOJO: THE R99/P HERITAGE DAY ROCK FESTIVAL (24 SEP)
It’s a great price for a whole rock festival. For R99 (if you buy the ticket online) Hillcrest Quarry is treating everyone to a rock festival featuring 14 amazing local blues-rock artists. Bands and singers include Crimson House, Hatchetman, Pebbleman, Jesse Jordan, The Stremes, and Madmouth Mike. They will be performing both their own original songs and covers of hits by the great blues and rock stars (think Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Beth Hart etc etc). Oh – and there’s a lucky draw for a Fender guitar.
COST: Tickets cost R99/p if you buy tickets online from Quicket.co.za (please note the R5 extra charge for ordering from Quicket), and R120/p at the door, where only cash will be accepted. GOLF AND BRAAI (24 SEP)
Doesn’t this sound like a day well spent? A round of golf at Clovelly Country Club pretty course and a braai on its deck. You can also play the fun Mashie Course pitch and putt competition at the driving range. This welcomes beginner/non-golfers and younger children (older kids are welcome to compete in the nine-hole game). The will be prizes and live music..

HERITAGE WEEK AT THE TOWNHOUSE HOTEL (18 – 24 SEP)
Enjoy the taste of home at the Townhouse Hotel’s Trees Restaurant. Here, a delectable menu of dishes traditional to various cultures in our country will be on offer. Take the opportunity, the week leading up to this national holiday, to enjoy the “With Love from South Africa” Heritage Week Menu. You can indulge in a lunch buffet at the restaurant or choose something from the à la carte dinner menu. You’ll find everything from boerewors, chakalaka and bunny chow to Cape Malay curries and snoek parcels, Ekasi-style tshisa nyamas and milk tart with Amarula ice cream – yoh! Delicious. Bring the whole family along for a sensational taste experience in the gorgeous setting of the restaurant.
COST: The Lunch Buffet costs R88/p and goes from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Friday is going to be a braai day with mouth-watering fire-roasted foods. Dinner goes from 7pm to 9pm and the dishes vary in price.

IMBIBE A SENSE OF HISTORY AT NEDERBURG (24 SEP)
Appreciate a piece of South African heritage through your tastebuds at the historic Nederburg Wine Estate. For an afternoon of munching on exquisite food and wine consider The Red Table for your Heritage Day celebration. Sample the vinos that represent Nederburg’s longstanding legacy of fine winemaking: the award-winning Heritage Heroes wine collection that pays homage to the winery’s pioneers. HERITAGE DAY FARM FEAST AT BOSCHENDAL (24 SEP)
One of the oldest farms in the country; Boschendal is home to several historical buildings that date back to the 1700s, and has a long legacy of winemaking – making it a part of our heritage. On Heritage Day, Boschendal invites you to gather around a feasting table with friends, family and fellow guests for a festive meal. The seasonal harvest from the farm will be served, as well as spit-braaied, pasture-fed oxen and desserts. The vino that the winery is loved for is set to feature too, of course. Alongside this afternoon of feasting there will be live music by Cape Town band Slow Jack, and pony rides for the kids. You can also wander around the farm and visit the lovely, Cape Dutch manor houses.

HERITAGE DAY AT !KHWA TTU (24 SEP)
Sitting pretty on Yzerfontein’s Grootwater Farm, the San Education and Culture Centre, !Khwa ttu, invites you to visit for Heritage Day. Join members of the San community there as they celebrate and familiarise you with their culture, a core element of South African heritage. Throughout the day there will be traditional dancing, singing, tractor rides, storytelling by the fire and tracking through the bush. A braai will be sizzling while food and drinks are available from the bar all day.
COST: Taking part in the activities is free, while there will be prices on the braai, food and drinks. Things will be kicking off at 10am and going until 7pm (or when the sun sets). BRAAI DAY AT TOBAGO RESTAURANT (24 SEP)
This Heritage Day, sail down to Radisson Blu’s in-house restaurant, where the deck literally touches the edge of the Atlantic ocean. Lounge in the sun at Tobago’s and enjoy a flavourful lunch buffet of flame-roasted food. Live music will serenade you as you eat, making for the perfect relaxed celebratory atmosphere.
COST: The braai lunch costs R395/p, whilst children between 5 and 12 years pay half price and children under the age of 5 eat for free. HERITAGE DAY SUNDAY BRAAI COLLAB AT THE VILLAGE IDIOT (24 SEP)
Celebrate the national holiday with lunch at this hot inner-city restaurant and watering hole. Old-world charm meets contemporary quirkiness, and a life-size ostrich stands atop the bar, so you know it’ll be a memorable one! Village’s Chef Wes Robb, in collaboration with Beer Country, is serving a braai menu with true Mzansi tastes. Expect classic SA favourites like Roosterkoek, smoked sweet potato, lamb chops and Peppermint Crisp tart. Complimentary wine tastings are also on the programme and the fun doesn’t end after you’ve eaten; after 8pm DJ King Louie will be on the decks and there’ll be dancing well into the night.

HERITAGE DAY 5-KM FUN RUN AT STELLENBRAU BREWERY (25 SEP)
The little brewery nestled in Stellenbosch will be hosting a family-friendly fun run in celebration of Heritage Day and some proceeds will go towards charity. You can run, jog, walk or even skip the rugged 5-km route alongside scenic vineyards in the area. There’s a beer stop along the way for over 18’s as well as food, drinks and live music to keep the party going until the evening.
COST: Entry is R50/p and free for children under 12. Booking online is necessary; if you have squiz on the event’s Facebook page you’ll see a link where you can book your spot. HERITAGE QUIZ NIGHT AT OBZ CAFE (26 SEP)
Find out how well you know Mzansi at this OBZ Cafe quiz night. Gather together a team of the five fellow patriots, or even go solo, and compete in a test of your SA knowledge. The popular watering hole will be offering quality beers on tap for R60 as well as a craft beer tasting and pizza sliders for R100, to keep you chewing over those quiz questions. There will be plenty of prizes, with R300 and R200 bar tabs for the first and second-place winners.
COST: Entry into the quiz costs R60/p – which is worth it because all entrants get one free draught or cocktail! Up to six people can play in one team. HERITAGE MONTH JAZZ MASTERS SERIES (28 - 30 SEP)
Enjoy the work of some of the country’s best jazz musicians this Heritage Month. From Thursday, 28 to Saturday, 30 September 2017, the Artscape Theatre will host the series of jazz concerts that you’ve been waiting for! The concerts include performances by Nomfundo Xaluva, Zoe Modiga, Amanda Tiffin, Sylvester Mazinyane, McCoy Mrubata, Buddy Wells, Alvin Dyers and Hilton Schilder.
COST: Tickets for Jazz Masters Series concerts are available online via Computicket.com or via the Artscape website directly (Artscape.co.za) for R100/p.
