Things to do on Freedom Day in Cape Town

Claim your freedom with museum visits and historical exhibitions

South Africa commemorates our country’s first democratic elections in 1994 on 27 April, and this year Freedom Day falls on a Tuesday. This means we have a glorious long weekend ahead of us to enjoy – for those wanting to take the Monday off. But even without the Monday break, there are still heaps of ways you can celebrate your freedom.

Spread out and have a picnic lunch, visit the Iziko Museums for free, go to the circus, or participate in a Freedom Day run with the kids. What’s first on your Freedom Day agenda?

GET FREE ENTRY TO ALL NATIONAL MUSEUMS

The Iziko South African Museum, Slave Lodge South African National Gallery and Bo-Kaap Museum are all open and free to the public on Freedom Day. There are some events scheduled, so you may want to plan ahead. At 11am join a virtual discussion and unpack the ‘meaning of Freedom Day in the time of Covid-19 and a democratic South Africa’ online via Zoom. By 2pm, the virtual Red in The Rainbow exhibition – a multimedia exhibition with a reconstruction of a prison cell from the 1970s – is ready to launch and invites you to join.

Date: 10am - 2:30pm, Tuesday 27 April
Price: Free. You can register for the live Zoom chat online or you can register for the virtual exhibition online

PICNIC IN A PRIVATE GARDEN AT AVONDALE

Avondale Wine Estate is extending its decadent weekend private picnics to Freedom Day. In Paarl, on the slopes of the beautiful Drakenstein Mountains, spread a blanket out next to a flowing stream or on a picnic bench in the shade of an oak tree. The Ochra Deli has put together a picnic basket of freshly baked baguettes, an artisanal salad, a charcuterie of butter, preserves, tapenade and spreads from the restaurant, as well as a selection of cheese, biltong, vegetable chips and nougat.

Date: 12pm, Tuesday 27 April
Price: R500 per basket and R125 for a kiddies basket. You can book your spot online via avondalewine.co.za

PAINT WITH RED WINE AT WARWICK WINE ESTATE

Have you ever painted with red wine before? It’s an easier medium than you think, especially because you’ll be in the safe hands of artist extraordinaire Lily Brannon. Warwick Wine Estate is celebrating Freedom Day with an outdoor Paint and Sip art class. Brannon will show you paint techniques using wine, and the price also includes a picnic basket and, of course, a glass of its world-famous pinotage rosé (by no means are you limited to that). You can choose between the standard gourmet, the vegetarian or the vegan picnic basket, and all the proceeds will go towards the non-profit organisation, Call 2 Care.

Date: 10am, Tuesday 27 April
Note: Although the event starts at 10am, you are welcome to come earlier and enjoy the grounds
Price: R600 per person. You can purchase your ticket online via call2care.org

LISTEN TO AN AFRICAN QUEEN SING

Spend your Freedom Day listening to Nhoza Sitsholwana. She’s considered a pioneer of traditional African fusion – a blend of blues, jazz and traditional African harmonies. The night will go on with the writhing, soulful sound ofAfro-pop band Warongx, and Ashley Hilton and the Stashband will end Freedom Day off with some high energy rock at The Daisy Jones Bar at Summerhills Wines.

Date: 3pm - 9pm, Tuesday 27 April
Price: R150pp. You can book your ticket online via Quicket
