Imagine you’re at a gathering on a big, green lawn. There are 100 other people. When you look a little closer you realise with a shock it’s Nelson Mandela, and there is Winnie beside him. Behind them are Miriam Makeba, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Helen Suzman.
That’s what it’s like at The Long March to Freedom exhibition, at the National Heritage Monument in Century City. You can walk amongst 100 of these heroes, in bronze life-sized sculpture form, any day of the week.
The exhibition offers daily guided tours, for team building, family or school activities. Image: Long March to Freedom
The exhibition features 100 local and global heroes who fought against inequality and discrimination in South Africa.

They’re placed on a long green lawn and as you walk amongst the replicas of them in life-sized bronze form, you get a powerful and tangible experience of South Africa’s past. You can also enjoy a guided tour while visiting the exhibition.

The sculptures range from 18th Century rebels, such as King Dinizulu kaCetshwayo and Chief Bhambatha kaMancinza, and missionaries who helped African tribes resist colonising forces (Harriet Colenso and her father Bishop John Colenzo), to the struggle heroes we know and admire, from Oliver and Adelaide Tambo to Steve Biko.
The monument gives life to those who fought for South Africa’s freedom, sometimes at the cost of their own lives, and you can wander amongst them, celebrating the victories and losses of these icons, many of them global icons – for example, Ché Guevara and Mahatma Gandhi feature.
The condensed history of icons, like that on Mahatma Gandhi, has really informative details. Image: Long March to Freedom
Many of the heroes are lesser known, and their potted history allows you an insight into historical struggles and resistances. It’s very interesting and you’ll learn a lot.
You’ll be surprised by the many discoveries of resisting forces in the last 200 years. Images: Long March To Freedom
