The Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB), accompanied by international guest artists, is set to re-enact the story of Princess Aurora in Tchaikovsky’s popular classical ballet The Sleeping Beauty at the Artscape Theatre from Saturday, 10 August to Sunday, 18 August 2013.
Directed by Elizabeth Triegaardt, who danced as the Lilac Fairy when the ballet was first staged in Cape Town in 1975, The Sleeping Beauty features a number of different dancers in the main roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund. On select nights (14 and 17 August), two principal members of The Royal Ballet in London, Roberta Marquez and Nehemiah Kish, will take on these characters, and in other performances, the lead roles will be shared by principal CTCB dancers Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne and duo Burnise Silvius (of the South African Mzansi Ballet theatre) and Trevor Schoonraad (of the CTCB).
The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) will accompany the cast in four out of six performances (the other two feature recorded music), giving audiences a true sense of the power and emotion behind the musical score that drives the choreography. Not to mention, the production will enchant both young and old with mesmerising dance work and appearances by other fairytale characters, like Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and the Big Bad Wolf.
