Gain insight into how everyday life continued for all walks of life despite the restrictions imposed by the apartheid regime at a free photography exhibition and screened documentary of the legendary David Goldblatt.
DAVID GOLDBLATT PICTURE THEORY EXHIBITION
For over six decades, internationally-acclaimed local photographer David Goldblatt (1930–2018) photographed the details of daily life in our country under the apartheid regime.
This exhibition is a celebration of how life went on for citizens from all walks of life during the regime. It offers superb insight for photographers and filmmakers working in the arena. The exhibited works are not for sale.
EXHIBITION HOURS
Tues–Fri: 10am–5:30pm; Sat: 10am–2pm
From 7 January until 7 February 2019.
THE DOCUMENTARY
David Goldblatt’s unrelenting, prolific protest-in-pictures against inequality and social injustice in South Africa depicts the complex realities of daily life under an apartheid regime rather than depicting the riots and fighting that happened in SA at the time.
Drawing on Goldblatt’s rich catalogue, and with interviews from Nadine Gordimer and William Kentridge, this is a focus on identity, place, and longing, set within the complex, ever-shifting landscape of South Africa. The documentary film, directed by Daniel Zimbler (shown four times a day), is also free for viewing.
