Taxi Violence at The Brass Bell

A pinch of sleaze and a dash of bourbon on the rocks

The Brass Bell welcomes Taxi Violence on the night of Saturday, 7 July, 2012, at 9pm for R40 p/p.

If the above sentence sounded like more of a warning than an invitation, you’re about to get schooled. Taxi Violence is a band. One of the best live acts South Africa has to offer, more specifically, and if past performances are anything to go on, they’ll likely make a pointed effort to live up to that reputation with their Saturday gig at the Kalk Bay institution. They describe their sound as blues-infused retro rock with a pinch of sleaze and bourbon for good measure.

Pour me another!

According to legend, the band was born after best friends Rian Zietsman, Loedi van Renen and Louis Nel invited (now fourth band member) George van der Spuy to a jam session at a military base. By March 2005 they had played their very first show together, and have since gone on to rock every significant venue and festival in SA. Their debut album, ‘Untie Yourself’ was released in 2006 and reached numberfour on 5FM’s Top 40 before the group was voted Media 24’s Best Live Act 2007. In 2008, before releasing their second album ‘The Turn’ (2009),Loedi van Renen left the band and Jason Ling became the new bass player. During 2009 they won further notoriety touring Germany and Holland, and 2010 saw them opening for international acts performing at fan parks during the FIFA World Cup. Their third and last album to date, ‘Long Way From Home’ was released in 2011, and has since been nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) and Taxi Violence themselves have been nominated for Group/Duo of the Year.

Dave Mac of Muse Magazine says, “Taxi Violence smashed onto the scene as a breath of fresh raw exuberance without the need for any fancy ‘post’ this, or ‘neo’ that or cute little words like ‘alt’ or ‘indie’ necessary to define them. The result is that after seven years together their sound is still a timeless ode to what they do best… rocking out!”

See you there.
