High-end, choreographed burlesque cabaret
The hilarious, award-winning theatre production Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is set to dazzle local audiences from Wednesday, 13 August to Saturday, 6 September 2014 at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay.
Directed by celebrated local film, television and theatre producer Bobby Heaney, the production features an all-star South African cast that includes Michael Richard, Louise Saint-Claire, Bo Petersen, Richard Gau, Emilie Owen and Kensiwe Tshabalala.
Taking inspiration from the work of 19th century Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov, the production tracks the side-splitting tale of three siblings. Vanya and Sonia eke out a quiet existence, having never managed to escape the confines of their childhood country home. On the contrary, their ambitious sister fled years before to become a famous movie star. In a surprising twist, Masha makes an unexpected trip to visit her brother and sister, bringing along her 20-something toy boy, Spike. As predicted by Vanya and Sonia’s housekeeper-cum-soothsayer, what follows is a whirlwind weekend of rivalry, regret and lust. The result is loads of thrills, spills and ridiculous antics that’ll leave you begging for more.
Written by US playwright Christopher Durang, the piece has racked up numerous awards since it first hit American theatres last year, including a 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, a 2013 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play and a 2013 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway/Off-Broadway Play.
