If your best friend was a bar (just bear with us), you’d want them to be an Irish pub – an institution celebrated the world around for its reliability, dependability and knack for always being there for you. Similarly, if you had to pair your most loved mate to a food that displayed those very same traits, you’d pick the trusty hamburger (after all, who’s not always happy to see one of these bad boys?).
In short, O’Driscoll’s 2-for-1 Wednesday burger special is one helluva match made in heaven.
Okay, maybe we’ve arrived at that point by a bit of stretched logic, but what’s certainly not exaggerated is the value of the Cape Town Irish pub’s all-day bun-and-patty deal (it’s on from August 2014 to December 2014).
For R68 you get a pair of 100% beef burgers topped with perfectly fried eggs, crispy bacon and delicious melted cheese and served with a side of chips (or salad) and the usual burger trimmings. The best thing about it other than the flavour? It’s an open-to-close special, so you don’t need to try and squeeze a burger-shaped window of opportunity into the day; the 2-for-1 fits into your schedule instead.
Plus, the fact that it’s topped with an egg might just mean it could qualify as breakfast too, so you could put in your order at 11am when O’Driscoll’s opens.
Aside from the Wednesday deal though, there’s plenty of reason to slip into one of the classic Irish pub’s comfortably worn booths on any other day of the week. From its convenient location just two pigeon flaps from the city centre’s Greenmarket Square and its selection of sport on TV to the general cheery vibe and the frothy Guinness on tap, O’Driscoll’s is always a good place to come for a dop.
Throw in the 120-minute double-whammy happy hour, and the charming old watering hole is like catnip for revelers.
