To give an answer to everyone's question, Yes! Cape Town Pride 2021 is happening this year. Just a month later than the usual date on 29 February. Here's what you need to know:
The exact dates for Cape Town Pride have yet to be confirmed. We will update you closer to the time here and via our newsletter.
The theme for this year's pride season is #YouMatter. Cape Town Pride announced that the theme "came from many different angles” on their Facebook page.
“One thing that we got emailed/DM'd and WhatsApp'd was that people felt alone during the lockdown. They felt forgotten. They felt lost." So, to help curb Covid loneliness and drive community and togetherness, Cape Town Pride will be bringing back all the usual events (with a few adjustments) plus some added extras.
This year Cape Town Pride will host a virtual pride parade. All community members are encouraged to send through a 30-second video representing their group, community project, NPO, or just to show some self-love. Tip: shoot your clip horizontally and with a steady hand. You can submit your video via virtualparade@capetownpride.org or via WeTransfer to the same email address. The cut-off date is 20 March.
All the community-based events leading up to the festival day are still happening, but the events will be live-streamed or packaged afterwards for those who cannot attend.
You can expect to find a few new additions. There’s going to be a pride market day, several pride drive-in movie nights, a socially-distanced awards dinner and a fashion event.
