Local And International Artists And A Mirage Of Contemporary Art

An intimate art fair with plenty to offer browsers and collectors

Over Valentine’s weekend, why not take your significant other on a walk around an art exhibition to admire beauty and compare your taste in art? The eighth edition Cape Town Art Fair highlights contemporary art from 14–16 February 2020 at the CTICC. 

SCREENINGS, BUS RIDES, TALKS AND AFTER PARTIES
During the fair, you can indulge in an exciting public programme that includes screenings, walkabouts with the artists, engaging talks, book signings and more happening both on-site and off-site. 

The Gallery Night programme invites fairgoers to hop on a City Sightseeing double-decker bus from the CTICC to visit galleries from the city bowl to Woodstock, concluding in two exclusive after-parties with DJs and food trucks. A MIRAGE OF EXHIBITS
Different curators ensure that emerging artists are presented alongside cutting-edge works globally. For example, Tomorrows/Today is a curated section which highlights artists who are set to be tomorrow’s dominant names in the art world. NEW GALLERIES OPENING AT THE EVENT
There are 39 new galleries exhibiting at the Cape Town Art Fair this year. Among them, the Fair welcomes North African Yosr Ben Ammar Gallery and A.GORGI both from Tunisia, Jahmek Contemporary Art from Angola and Galerie Veronique Rieffel from Ivory Coast. Their participation strengthens one of the fair's goals to provide a platform for more voices from the African continent.

ART TOURS FOR KIDS + INTERACTIVE WALL
Cape Town Art Fair is suitable for all ages. The fair is partnering with Lalela, a public benefit organisation supporting at-risk youth in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Lalela organisers and students have put the following together for this year’s fair: 

Kids-4-Kids Tours for teens: 
On all three days of the fair, children in ± grades 9–12 are invited to join 30 and 45-minute art tours to learn about different artists and galleries. The tours will be led by grades 11 and 12 Lalela learners and alumni from Silikamva and Hout Bay High Schools. 

Lalela interactive wall:
The wall will feature original artwork undertaken by the students of Lalela, following the Lalela curriculum and posing the question “What word defines your identity?”. Visitors may write or draw their response inside a circle on the wall. The aim is for the wall to become a unique multicoloured artwork that continues organically growing, the end result ultimately proving and demonstrating that we’re all actually not that different.

REFRESHMENTS TO FEED THE CREATIVITY
There will be cafés serving sandwiches, light meals, salads, cool drinks, tea and coffee. Boschendal wines and Methode Cap Classique will also be available along with beers and a selection of spirits. For the first time at the fair there is also an outside bar with seating.  

EXPLORE THE EXHIBITION BOOTHS
The fair takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the layout is exhibition-style, so you can wander around from booth to booth. There is seating at the café areas and seminar sections.
