Jeremy Loops Concert at Assembly Cape Town

The Mother City’s modern folk sensation makes a homecoming with a Friday gig at The Fringe’s live music mecca

Roughly four years ago environmentalist and one-man band Jeremy Loops nervously played his first gig, all the while wondering if audiences would connect with his music. Since, he’s released a debut album, Trading Change, that climbed straight to number one on the iTunes South Africa charts, topped radio playlists for weeks on end and headlined massive local festivals.

And now, he’s returning to Cape Town after a mini-national tour to play a Friday concert at Assembly on 19 September 2014 one day before he’s set to open for UK indie-pop rockers The Fray.

The homecoming show gives locals a chance to catch Loops’s combination of lilting folk and booming city rhythms in an intimate venue before he takes the stage to wow what very well could be the largest audience of his career. Not to mention, it treats local groupies to a live performance of many of the tunes that have propelled Trading Change to such elevated heights: think ‘Sinner’, ‘Power’ and breakout single ‘Down South’ featuring Motheo Moleko.

If you’re unfamiliar with Loops’s music, the most important bit to know is that he uses a loop pedal to layer multiple melodies and sounds in real time, and that he takes his inspiration from legends like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, but also puts stock in elements from the hip-hop, reggae and even gypsy-jazz genres.

Loops also co-founded tree-planting social enterprise Greenpop, and when he’s not immersing himself in his musical career, he’s often travelling Southern Africa teaching underprivileged children how to care for the planet.
