The City of Cape Town is set to host an interfaith religious ceremony to honour the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela at the Grand Parade on Friday, 6 December 2013. The service will start at 5pm and is the first of a number of Western Cape activities designed to celebrate the life of the global icon in a shared and dignified manner.
Madiba passed away at the age of 95 at his home on Thursday, 5 December 2013.
The Grand Parade is an appropriate venue to pay tribute to the anti-Apartheid revolutionary since he made his first freedom speech from the balcony of the Cape Town City Hall overlooking the town square upon his release from prison on Sunday, 11 February 1990.
Transport to the Interfaith Religious Ceremony for Nelson Mandela
The City of Cape Town has made free transport to and from the venue available to all. Golden Arrow and MyCiTi bus services as well as Metrorail train services travelling into town between 12pm and 3pm will be free to the public. After the ceremony, patrons leaving town can, once again, use these services free of charge from 7pm.
Normal tariffs and schedules apply outside of these designated time frames.
