Chef’s Table at Five Flies Restaurant

Pair an array of decadent dishes with exquisite vintages at this iconic Mother City eatery

Cosy restaurant Five Flies presents an innovative warming solution to July and August’s cold and dreary weather: the exclusive Chef’s Table. The inner city eatery has put together the experience to offer lovers of exceptional vino and gourmet cuisine a scintillating six-course food and wine pairing menu (for only R295p/p) every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from Thursday, 18 July to Saturday, 31 August 2013.

Each evening, Five Flies will set a table for 20 gastronomes to match wines from some of the most revered wine farms in the Cape Winelands with creative dishes designed by resident chef, Dylan Jacobs, who, along with the winery’s representative, will discuss the courses and why a particular wine is best suited for a particular dish. Diners can expect an indulgent menu, and a glass of wine is served with each course:

• Amuse-bouche: Smoked Norwegian salmon infused with coriander, honey and soy reduction set on a nest of deep-fried rice noodles.
• Soup: Butternut and apple soup served with exotic baby mushrooms and vanilla foam.
• Salad: Orange and avocado salad with baby watercress.
• Sorbet: Lemon sorbet with a lime chilli tuile.
• Mains: Rib eye mousse set in a marrow bone with an aubergine disc, chargrilled rib eye medallions, asparagus spears and red wine jus (a vegetarian option is also available).
• Dessert: White chocolate mousse with mixed berry coulis served in a basket tuile.

Though the menu remains unchanged for the duration of the food and wine pairing evenings, each night sees a different wine farm’s vino presented. The first event of the series (18 July) features vintages from the Deux Frères wine farm in Stellenbosch.

Only 20 spots per night are available, and booking is essential. A place at the Chef’s Table costs R275p/p (price includes a glass of wine with each course), and the fee must be paid up front to secure the booking; a vegetarian option is also available, make sure you specify this when booking.
