These days, markets in the Mother City are a dime a dozen, but few of the new and even established souks can compete with the iconic and historical setting of the Cape Town Summer Market. Based in the scenic Company’s Garden, this annual bazaar is the perfect place to finish up your last-minute Christmas shopping; the market will run every evening (with the exception of Christmas Day) from Saturday, 20 to Tuesday, 30 December 2014.
“This market is about celebrating our rich heritage and the cultural diversity that makes Cape Town unique and strong. It forms part of this administration’s efforts to create spaces in our city in which communities from around Cape Town as well as our many international and South African visitors can experience the wealth of creativity in the city,” said City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development Councillor Garreth Bloor.
Formerly known as the Adderley Street Night Market, this city centre fair allows friends, families and foreign visitors to browse through bits and baubles on sale from more than 200 vendors, whose stalls are once again set to stretch the length of Government Avenue all the way up onto the lawns of the Iziko National Art Gallery.
Whether it’s for a leisurely stroll or a quick after-work excursion for a look-see, shoppers are bound to have a good time just being in the gorgeous green setting with the festive cheer humming in the air. There will also be live performances scheduled throughout the 10-day run: think karaoke, stand-up comedy and mini concerts.
The Cape Town Summer Market is also a great opportunity to soak in the summer sunshine with a picnic in the pristine Company’s Garden or sample the fare at the iconic green’s latest restaurant (the restaurant closes at 6pm).
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 CAPE TOWN SUMMER NIGHT MARKET IN THE COMPANY’S GARDEN
The Cape Town Summer Market is open at 4pm every day from Saturday, 20 to Tuesday, 30 December 2014 (excluding Thursday, 25 December) and closes at 11pm. Entry is absolutely free!
